Chicken is a popular dish for many Kiwi families. But are you happy to pay the extra cost for free-range or organic chicken? If so, why do you fork out extra for it? Although buying free-range chicken might be an ethical choice for many, it's not necessarily any healthier than other chicken.
As part of a new Stuff series, we look at why chicken is so cheap to buy nowadays, what happens inside the barn, why chickens get so big and the use of antibiotics in chicken feed. To learn more about what happens to your chicken before you put it in your shopping trolley, click the links above.

One way you can help to look after our rivers and streams is to harvest rainwater during wet weather and store it for household use.

My wife and I are an English couple resident in NZ and living in Nelson. In semi retirement, we are both artists, and are about to lose our rental following its sale by the owners. We are seeking a 4? bed roomed (lots of books) property with large garaging or outbuildings (for using as a studio). We (probably optimistically) don't want to spend more than $450 a week and need to move by mid to late November. We have no pets and are non smokers, are very reliable, well educated and trustworthy. We would be happy to house sit or undertake some responsibilities to compensate for a lower rent. We are both chronic animal lovers (more dogs than cats) and hope to find somewhere that we can indulge our passion for gardening within easy reach of Nelson preferably but not essential. Currently with Haven Property Managers and have great references.
