NCC has had a qualified stonemason, Ben West from Stoneworks, Christchurch on site to advise on the repairs needed. The fallen column will now be removed and put into storage as the support structure the column sat on was also damaged when the vehicle hit it. This structure needs to be stabilised before the column can be put back in place so this work will be carried out first. NCC have also obtained advice from a heritage architect/conservator on the correct way to repair the damage to the church steps themselves so this work can proceed.
The police file is active & they are following strong leads in the inquiry - watch this space.
