Their enthusiasm and passion is amazing & is the key to the projects success. The wonderful team at the Nelmac Nursery begin the process over the winter months with the preparation and seeding of the wide range of flowers and plants to be used in the baskets.
NCC would really appreciate the help of volunteers for the next stage of planting out of the baskets over three day - Monday 14 Oct., Tuesday 15 Oct., Wednesday 16 Oct.. There will be two shifts per day with hopefully 15 volunteers each shift. If you would like to volunteer as a hanging basket planter then contact the friendly people at NCC's Customer Service Centre on 546 0200 to register.
HISTORY
The iconic hanging baskets in our City owe their beginning to the enthusiasm of the late Alan Drummond. Alan saw similar displays in cities around the world while travelling and introduced them to Nelson. His efforts to work with the Council, local businesses and enthusiastic supporters led to the hanging of baskets in our central city for the first time in 2000.

Get your voting papers in on ‘Vote Day’ - Saturday 5 October

Local Government New Zealand is urging people to post their voting papers on Vote Day – Saturday 5 October 2019.

All voting papers must be returned to the relevant council by midday on Saturday 12 October, and voters need to factor in the time it will take the papers to get through the postal system.

New Zealand Post advises that the Standard Post delivery target is up to 3 working days for nationwide delivery, while delivery to and from rural areas may take longer. However, these targets are guides only, and are not guaranteed – delivery may take longer.

Visit www.nzpost.co.nz... to find your nearest post box or office. To get more information on your local candidates, visit policylocal.nz and local council websites for both information and meet the candidate schedules.

“Some of the main reasons people give for not voting are they forgot, ran out of time or were too busy,” says LGNZ Chief Executive Malcolm Alexander.

“So to make sure people give themselves the best chance to have their say we are encouraging people to vote early on what we’ve dubbed Vote Day. Fill out your papers during the week and then to pop them in the paid envelope and into the nearest post box on Saturday 5 October.”

“Voting papers have to arrive at council offices by midday Saturday 12 October, so sending them in on Vote Day gives them plenty of time to get through the postal system.”

Mr Alexander says it is important New Zealanders participate in the selection of the people who will make decisions that affect most people’s lives on a daily basis.

“Local government shapes the place that you live. It’s the pavements you walk on, the roads where you drive, the water you drink, shower in and swim in, your parks, libraries and swimming pools where you take the kids,” Mr Alexander says.

“There’s been a lot of robust public conversation around climate change, the housing crisis, the quality of our water and our transport options, and now is the time to turn that conversation into a vote that influences your local leadership.”

“Voters can still post their papers after 5 October, but there is no harm in doing it earlier,” Mr Alexander says.

Eligible voters who didn’t enrol before 16 August won’t receive their papers in the mail, but can make a special vote by visiting their local council offices, or by contacting their Council Electoral Officer.

What: ‘Vote Day’
When: Saturday 5 October 2019
Why: Make sure you have your say by voting early
How: Visit www.nzpost.co.nz... to find your nearest post box or office. To get more information on your local candidates, visit policylocal.nz and local council websites for both information and meet the candidate schedules.

Update: Codgers harvest deferred.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback about the harvesting in the Codgers recreation area. We’ve spent the day having further discussions with stakeholders, to come up with an alternative plan.

As a result, we are pleased to let you know that the harvesting operation has been deferred, which means we all get to enjoy the trails in the Atmore and Tantragee Reserves this spring and summer.

We’ll be speaking to stakeholders more over the coming months to work out the best time to harvest the trees with the least impact on recreation users.

Thanks again for your feedback, we do value it.

While I fully agree with his sentiment, and am adamantly opposed to unnecessary pollution by junk mail, I think that during this once-every-3-year event it is okay and very important.
Because you see, we have so little to go by when choosing our representatives, and there is so much at stake - the future of our city and how it will be for our children, nothing less.
When choosing our reps we rely on anything from a short info blurb online, replete with the buzzwords we want to hear, to names and faces on (non-eco) billboards which ensure "top of the mind" automatic behaviour when it comes to ticking the boxes.
Candidates have varying levels of budgeting in their campaign, and it is usually those with minimal budgets, no sponsors (interest parties) and a more eco-friendly approach of no flyers or billboards who get missed - and those are exactly the candidates we of the "no junk mail" persuasion may well resonate with!
So please, lets be a bit forgiving during this short campaign, and take our due diligence further and deeper when studying our options. Look for substance, can-do, and ability.
Oh, and please apply the same care when choosing our DHB representatives. They control more money and probably affect our lives and well being even more than mayor and councillors.
