I've thought long and hard about this vanity card. What I'm about to say is going to upset quite a few people. Some of them are my friends. Or perhaps, after reading this, my former friends. But I can't let that stop me from speaking my mind. It's time to say out loud what I know in my heart to be true. Vegetarians and vegans are mobility bigots. They believe that if a life form doesn't move, it's fair game to be killed and eaten. They hold a deepseated prejudice against plants, or, as plants prefer to be called, "We Who Stand Still." This hateful philosophy is predicated on the idea that movement equals consciousness, or, if you will, a certain level of sacredness. To put it simply, if it walks, flies, or swims, or comes from something that does, it should not be ingested. If it doesn't, yum-yum. Of course when you ask vegetarians and vegans, they say no, they're only opposed to eating flesh. But what could be more fleshy than a mushroom? Or avocado? Or eggplant? The ugly truth is they are cowards who murder and devour anything that can't run away. These people, who act so high and mighty, so spiritually elevated, have somehow constructed a style of cuisine that would justify them eating my Uncle Murray, a man known for sitting still for hours at a time, staring at a TV that is turned off. So the next time you order a salad consider this: Prince told us that doves cry. But what if kale does too?

This time we have partnered with NZAEE Sea Week to give you opportunities to learn all about the fabulous Sea Creatures in our oceans.
From the 1st and 6th October we will be hiding a whole bunch of rocks for you to find in and around Taradale.
Hunt for rocks from 10am and bring them in to Boredom Busters at 349 Gloucester Street before 2pm to claim your prize.
Everyone who brings in a ‘Taradale ROCKS’ rock can also enter the draw to win a Penguin Encounter or Family Pass to the National Aquarium.

Areas the rocks may be hidden include; Town Clock and Rose Garden, Gloucester Street from Matts Autos to Four Square corner, around White Street shops, Lee Road carpark and Town Hall, Taradale Park and Library and Puketapu Road between Symons Lane and Lee Road.
CONDITIONS:
* Open to children 0 - 13yrs
* Rocks will be hidden prior to 9am daily
* Children must be accompanied by adults when hunting for rocks and redeeming prizes
* Rocks must be genuine ‘Taradale Rocks’, i prior to 2pm daily on the back (with identifying number) to be eligible for a prize. This will be checked at redemption.
* One prize per child per day
* Rocks must be returned to Boredom Busters prior to 2pm daily to claim prize
* One prize per child per day
* Each returned rock makes child eligible to enter a prize draw
* Prize draw prizes are;
First: Penguin Encounter at the National Aquarium of NZ. The winner will be able to meet the penguin keepers, see what the penguins eat for lunch, visit the penguin recovery room and help feed the penguins at the 1:30pm feeding time.
This prize is suitable for children over the age of six, with those under twelve needing to be accompanied by an adult.
Second: One single use family pass for two adults and two children to visit the National Aquarium. Usual conditions of vouchers apply.

The new road opened on Monday with signage indicating the new entrance was installed. The old intersection, which had been the scene of a string of serious crashes, was tagged by the New Zealand Transport Agency as one of the region's most notorious safety blackspots. The old entrance off SH2 now has temporary speed restrictions in place as it is being disestablished.
Temporary speed limits of 50km/h are in place through the work area and motorists are asked to be patient and drive with care on the approaches.

This year Age Concern New Zealand want all New Zealanders to sign up as Age Concern Dignity Champions and stand up for the human rights of older Kiwis.
“There is no excuse for elder abuse, says Stephanie Clare, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive. I am appalled that we are still having to deal with cases each day where older people are taken advantage of.
“Just because someone is older it doesn’t mean they are less valuable, have less purpose or should lose basic human rights, the right to make their own choices and respect from those around them.
“Of the cases we see, 75% of alleged abusers are family members, either adult children or partners of adult children and that needs to stop!
“So come on Kiwis we all have a part to play. You can take a stand against ageism and join me by signing up today!” says Stephanie.
An Age Concern Dignity Champion pledges to:
• Reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual
• Speak up when they hear people speaking negatively about growing old
• Have the courage to question practices they feel are disrespectful to older people
• Not patronise older people
• Be patient, polite and friendly
• Have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect
• Build relationships – they combat isolation and loneliness by getting to know the older people in their lives.
