To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.
For the month of September, we want to use our voice to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Perhaps consider sharing a cuppa with someone you know who could use the support or challenge your family and friends to unplug from social media for the entire month to improve their well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for FREE support from a trained counsellor.
This month also coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) followed by Mental Health Awareness Week (21 - 27 September).
However you choose to take part, make sure to tag us in your posts + use the following hashtag so we can see how you’re cultivating better mental health for yourself or in your community this month:

Do you sometimes drive a few kms over the speed limit? Road police have scrapped their speed buffer on Kiwi roads in favour of a no tolerance approach.
All motorists edging over the limit at any time of the year can now expect to be pulled over and possibly fined, national road policing manager Acting Superintendent Gini Welch confirmed on Friday.
It brings an end to a long-standing convention that law enforcement would let minor speeding breaches slide.
“We don’t have a threshold,” Welch told Stuff, “we don’t have anything other than the speed limit.
Previously, besides zero tolerance long weekends, it was understood police could exercise discretion up to 10kmh over the speed limit.

The clinic will be located at King’s Church in Meeanee on Saturday, 29 August, from 10am to 2pm.
Updates will be posted on Hawke’s Bay DHB’s Facebook page if wait times are longer than expected or supplies run out sooner than anticipated.
Hawke’s Bay District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Nick Jones, said the DHB had arranged the pop-up clinic to remove barriers to immunisation for Māori and Pasifika communities.
“In line with the push underway nationally to increase immunisation uptake among Māori and Pasifika communities, we are really encouraging whānau to come along, get a flu shot and at the same time take the opportunity to be swabbed for Covid-19 because we know these communities have been the most affected by Auckland’s outbreak,” Jones said.
Meanwhile, free Covid-19 testing centres remain open throughout the region, operating in Napier, Hastings, Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay.
“We strongly encourage people displaying cold or flu symptoms to call one of the testing centres below, or their GP, to be triaged for testing, which is free,” Dr Jones said.
* Napier: 06 650 4000 open 9am-5pm Mon-Sun.
* Hastings: 06 281 2644 open 8am-8pm Mon-Sun.
* Wairoa: 06 838 8333 open 8.30am-5pm Mon-Fri.
*Central Hawke’s Bay residents need to be referred by their doctor or phone

This will take the direction of the Eskdale Park away from being the beautiful peaceful country park it is currently and away from the original intention of the park. There has been a lot of support from the community to keep Eskdale Park as a natural reserve. Now is the time for us to show this support to the council.
HDC is holding a public meeting on Wednesday, Sept 9th from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Hukarere Girls College located at 17 Shaw Road, Eskdale.
Please come and show your support for keeping Eskdale Park as a undeveloped reserve. It is vital that we make it clear to the council that we want the park left as a safe green family friendly park. The park has such a rich history and is loved by so many people. It is worth protecting and keeping safe for future generations to enjoy.
I can help organize carpools or rides if people wish. Please reach out to me if you need a ride or would like to carpool or if you would like to help in any way. Together we will protect the Eskdale Park.
There is also an online petition you can sign to keep Eskdale Park as an undeveloped reserve. Here is the link for the petition if you would like to sign it. Thank you!

Principal Rural Fire Officer Trevor Mitchell says with temperatures expected to get close to 20 degrees, anyone planning on lighting a fire needs to be cautious.
"Anywhere where dry grass is present has an escalated fire risk. This can cause a fire to quickly spread and cause unnecessary callouts."
If anyone in the community sees a fire that looks like it is getting out of control, don’t hesitate to call 111.
