ACC May Owe You a Refund if between 2002 - 2017 you were self employed or paid provisional ACC Levies.

Sorry for this really long message. If after the first paragraph you work out it does not apply to you, you may want to skip the rest. It sounded important so I thought I should pass it on.

Sorry for this really long message. If after the first paragraph you work out it does not apply to you, you may want to skip the rest. It sounded important so I thought I should pass it on.

Are you owed a refund?
If you were in your first year of self-employment between 2002 and 2017, or paid provisional ACC levies after ceasing trading, ACC may owe you a refund.

ACC expects to refund around $100 million to approximately 300,000 business customers who were incorrectly charged levies during that time.

ACC will refund:

all first-year levies collected between 2002-2017 from self-employed customers who worked full-time (averaged over 30 hours per week over the financial year.) This affects around 106,000 customers and equates to approximately $36 million in levies.
businesses who paid provisional invoices and weren’t required to do so because they’d subsequently ceased trading or had changed their business structure. This amounts to around $64 million.
The average refund works out at about $340 (excluding GST) for first-year self-employed, and around $415 (excluding GST) for provisional payments. Customers will also receive an interest payment.

ACC expects the refund process to be completed by 31 March 2019.

What you need to do
If you think you might be eligible for a refund, ACC needs your current contact details.

Either visit acc.co.nz and fill in a web form with your contact details, or if you’re already registered for MyACC for Business, use that channel to check your contact details are up-to-date.

ACC will update their webpage as more details become available.

How did this happen?
An update to ACC’s billing and policy system identified these issues.

Preparations for a new levy system included a legal check on whether the new levy system would be compliant with regulations. ACC discovered the regulations from 2002 were drafted in a way that didn’t allow for levying of first-year self-employed.

They also uncovered the second issue with provisional invoices paid by businesses that had subsequently ceased trading or changed their business structure, but hadn’t informed ACC.

ACC suspended invoicing new self-employed customers for their first year when the issue was uncovered. No first-year invoices have been issued since March 2017, and this will continue until the regulations are updated.

“I would like to apologise to customers who have been affected, our focus now is to make this right as soon as we can,” says Phil Riley, ACC’s Head of Business Customer Service Delivery.

Hi neighbours,

What's the highest price per litre of fuel you've paid for recently? Petrol prices are skyrocketing around the country, with some Kiwi motorists shelling out more than $3 a litre for fuel!

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern claims that New Zealanders are being "fleeced" at the pump, but petrol companies are pushing back on those claims.

The Government plans to rush through changes to an act, which will allow a watchdog to investigate the margins on fuel. Click here to read more about how your rising fuel taxes will be spent.

So what are your thoughts on the current price of fuel? Can you and your family afford it? Do you think the current prices need to be investigated? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #583

One of the greatest honors of my life was directing a scene for The Big Bang Theory featuring Stephen Hawking. Try as I might, there was no way to prepare for an event like that. I’ve met some pretty smart people making sitcoms, but none of them would rank as a once-in-a-generation, paradigm-shifting genius (okay, maybe Jon Cryer). I also had never met someone trapped in a totally unresponsive body (insert gratuitous ex-wife joke here).

When I was first introduced to Professor Hawking, one of his assistants lifted his hand in order for me to shake it. I was told that while he cannot move his hand, he can feel and enjoy the touch of other people. I remember thinking how this might explain that whole business with the nurse. I then told him that I tried reading A Brief History of Time, but sadly could not understand a word of it. My honesty was rewarded when his eyes lit up. His assistant whispered to me that when nonscientists tell him they enjoyed the book, he knows they’re lying.

After a few more nervous, dim-witted pleasantries, “You know the Rose Bowl Parade goes right by here,” it came time for me to direct the scene between him and Jim Parsons. Looking back, I think I can safely say the material played well. The story worked, the jokes all scored. But I will be forever tormented by the memory of how the scene began. I looked down at Stephen Hawking, frozen in that chair, and, to my horror, my mouth said, “Action!”

Thankfully, my poor choice of word only rattled me. Professor Hawking would guest star on the show many more times over the years. And while there’s no way for a civilian like me to even remotely appreciate his intellect, I can tell you what I came to understand about the man: Stephen Hawking had a fierce sense of humor. Especially about himself. His willingness to laugh, despite the enormous difficulties he faced, was part of his genius

Thursday 11th of October just before 3pm.
Vicinity: Hastings CBD close to corner of South Hampton and Market Street.
A man apparently driving a Car towing a trailer chased another male who was walking on the footpath in Central Hastings. The driver chased the pedestrian along the road, and then got out and chased him into a house that the man ran to for protection. It is reported that the driver of the car when chasing the man into the house was holding something he was using as a weapon.
The police were canvassing the streets yesterday to ask if anyone saw anything to add to their search for the car driver.
If you saw anything that can help with their investigation, please contact the police.
I just wondered if my chance any of you were driving by yesterday and happened to notice anything that could help. You may have seen the car with the trailer and can give a description of the colour, make, model or driver etc. Sorry to report bad news, but figured it was worth a try in case someone saw something that can help.
