Around the world, communities, schools, businesses, groups and people from all walks of life are taking big and small steps in solidarity with refugees. This World Refugee Day, we challenge everyone in New Zealand to join together and take a step to make a difference.

You can take part in the #StepWithRefugees campaign, where participants will collectively walk, run and cycle 1 billion miles - the distance refugees cover each year to reach safety, by adding your steps here: stepwithrefugees.org...

Another option is to volunteer with the New Zealand Red Cross as a Refugee Support Volunteer. Volunteers help families start again, while teaching them about New Zealand culture and connecting them with people from the community.

For anyone based in the Wairarapa, Masterton Neighbourhood Support has a programme called 'WeConnect' that matches new residents from diverse backgrounds including refugees to a local buddy. If you're interested in volunteering or supporting the programme in other ways you can email Masterton Neighbourhood Support Area Coordinator, Cathy Cameron, at: cathy@connectingcommunities.org.nz

Dog Registration Fees 2019 Napier

Bridget from Hospital Hill

I have emailed them on three separate occasions to ask about the Responsible Dog owner option to significantly reduce the fees, but I have had not one reply to any of my emails. Is this a deliberate ploy to achieve the higher fees? I am aware the cutoff for this was apparently 31 May but I didn’t receive my fees notice until 6 June. I would be interested if anyone else has had similar problems.

This Week is Volunteer Week!
Thank you to every single person in our community who takes time to care for others by giving of their efforts, skills and resources. Volunteers often work tirelessly and do it without payment. They show love and kindness, compassion and a sense of sharing, mercy and grace.
A BIG SHOUT OUT TO EVERYONE WHO VOLUNTEERS. How about you use this post to give thanks and pay tribute to those you know who volunteer in any way, shape or form. Like a Good Sorts Post! They might be currently active. They might be retired but you are thankful for what you saw them doing. They might no longer be with us but their memory and what they did is something you would like to honour.
I will start:
* I want to honour all the parents who go into schools to help out with reading, sharpening pencils, school trips and camps, looking out for kids and providing a uniform when they see someone is without or the parent who sends along extra lunch to share for kids who don't have any. (I know schools say not to, but I was never good at following those kinds of rules and neither were my kids, if a kid is hungry and they have no lunch, too bad, I sent extra sandwiches to share...sshhh no growling me!) And the parents who coach sports teams - you ROCK! And the parents who look out for other parents and go out of their way to make friends, so that they feel supported and welcome. Susan Brown, Lisa Reeves, Paula Richardson, Claire Barlow, Adele Stuart, Rona Akkerman (sorry about the spelling not sure there), Julie Norris, Benji Carey-Smith, Val Baker, Simon Moffit, Coach Moore for Soccer, Craig who has done the Gymnastics at the Hastings Gym Club, Peter Alexander, Sasha Watt, ... oh my the list goes on for me! Huge thanks to you and the many others who volunteered to help my kids and other kids!

In the US last year, Mom's Organic Market founder and CEO Scott Nash did something many are afraid to do: He ate a cup of yoghurt months after its expiration date. And then tortillas a year past their expiration date.

"I mean, I ate heavy cream I think 10 weeks past date," says Nash, "and then meat sometimes a good month past its date. It didn't smell bad. Rinse it off, good to go."

It was all part of his year-long experiment to test the limits on food that had passed its expiration date.

I am wanting to start the ball rolling and if we all do it, I am sure we will get action. I have finally had a gutsful. This morning my water is actually black, have done everything the council has asked of me. I have all my emails and paperwork over the past two and a half years, I have all the councils replies and pathetic responses, the excuses, you name it, I have it.

I am ready to go into battle with all and whoever I come across .

This is utter B&**SH@T from the Napier city council, and they have the gall to tell me my rates are rising this year by 6.4% this year, just after last year they rose from $1706 to $2050.

Join in and refuse to pay your water contribution on your rates bill everyone.
