Napier City Council said it was treating the city's water supply as a "precautionary measure" while it awaited further test results.
The council said the positive E.coli indicator came from a test at its Enfield Road reservoir which services most of the city during periods of high demand.
It warned residents not to panic if their water smelt or tasted of chlorine.
