COURSES AND WORKSHOPS FOR MEMBERS OF SENIORNET NAPIER AND WORKSHOPS FOR NON MEMBERS:
Do you struggle with digital age technologies such as computers and smart phones? You don’t have to be interested in them for them to influence your life. You cannot afford to ignore them in the hope that they will go away and you may miss some positive opportunities. So how can we older folk handle this situation with our wisdom gathered over nearly a lifetime? Come along and join in at SeniorNet Napier to explore, learn, embrace and discuss this modern technology. Remember, YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO IGNORE!
Engaging with the world around us helps the brain stay active and this can be as valuable for our well-being as physical activity. Overcoming isolation is the most important task especially during retirement. Computers, smart phones and the internet are a great way to keep the mind active. Some just use the internet for the news, for monitoring their finances or for understanding the rights of older people. You can use Skype as a video link to communicate with people worldwide. Many older people have found Skyping their families and friends to be one of the most useful tools that modern technology has provided. Then there are the service functions; online grocery shopping, finding a local tradesperson or aged care provider, and check their references.
Most people at retirement will have some degree of digital age literacy; either professionally or through community based computer societies. SeniorNet Napier Incorporated is one of these which brings older adults and technology together in a friendly, fun and stress free manner. It is for people over the age of 50 who wish to learn more about digital age technology and what it can do for them. Small classes, with volunteer tutors about the same age as their students, run courses and workshops that range from introductions to specialist subjects.
Application forms must be completed and submitted for courses but not for most workshops. The Internet Banking, Trade Me and Neighbourly workshops are open to both members and non-members of SeniorNet Napier.
Five terms of tuition over 6 weeks duration each, take place annually. The dates for the weekly two hour classes/workshops are listed below.

Calm Abiding Meditation (Samatha) allows us to release anxiety, stress and tension and increase happiness and well-being. Developed from traditional Buddhist mindfulness training techniques, this course teaches awareness of breath, posture and feelings to improve our physical and mental health and helps us to transform negative situations and our negative states of mind. I feel compelled to express that as a councillor should it not be your job to make sure before voting on anything concerning the great people of Napier that you have all the facts and take into account our wishes. How can we now trust any councillor knowing you did not do due dilligence before making such a controversial vote. The history was available for anyone to research and our older citizens made the facts very clear but were dismissed as if they were just an annoyance.
