It's the great kererū hunt - have you seen them in your neighbourhood?

Hawke's Bay residents are being asked to keep an eye out for any kererū swooping across their backyards as the Great Kererū Count takes flight across the country.

This year the count will run from September 22 to October 1. A partnership between WWF-New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington City Council, and NatureWatch NZ, the project helps build up where the native pigeon can, and can't, be found.

In the 2014-16 Great Kererū Count there were 857 kererū counted in Hawke's Bay.

WWF-New Zealand's chief executive Livia Esterhazy said the count was vital not just for protecting the kererū, but for ensuring the health of forest ecosystems into the future.

"Large flocks of more than 100 kererū were once a common sight in skies over New Zealand – our ambition is to see them prolific again," she said.

Kererū were known as "gardeners of the skies", because they played a crucial role in dispersing seeds of native canopy trees such as tawa, taraire, and matai.

They were the only birds who did so, making them an essential part of forest regeneration.

Senior lecturer in ecology at Victoria University, Dr Stephen Hartley, said the project helped build up a detailed picture of where kererū were distributed across the country, what they were feeding on and where they were found in towns and cities.

"Over time, we hope to discover whether numbers are increasing or decreasing and whether populations are faring better or worse in some parts of the country compared to others.

"This year we are especially keen for people to seek out new locations, as well as returning to old haunts to make timed observations of between five and 30 minutes. Even if you don't see a kererū in this time – that's still useful information and important to submit."

This year, there are three options to make kererū observations – via www.greatkererucount.nz... www.naturewatch.org.nz... or with the iNaturalist App available on iTunes and Google Play.

Hi.

A discussion point that most, nearly all consumers are looking to achieve in most/all things they like, need, want, or buy is how to get more from less?

Would you agree that we want the most we can for the least amount of money spent?

We are living in a deflationary economy, one where the rise of technology has improved efficiency at a rate that beats inflation ultimately allowing every manufacturer to create more from less.

Many of you may have heard of the term "Disruption". This is what technology does to traditional business models, it drives efficiency, lowers costs, makes it easier for buyers to buy and consume products. The biggest disruptor's we have seen in NZ is Uber and Airbnb.

Some business embrace disruption to drive profits such as robotics in the fruit industry or AI in accounting, but disruption is yet to be mainstream in the real estate industry, well that's what the big brands want you to think in HB.

Real Estate in HB is one of the businesses that has thrived in the last 2 years. Disruption hasn't been able to make it yet because the big brands don't want to do more from less, like all other business in NZ have to. The rise in house prices also means rise in profit for large brands. Right now even with a shortage of properties on the market we see an increase in the number of people getting into real estate as sales people to help drive the profits of the big brands.

So how will disruption start in real estate?

Well its already started, there are smaller brands like ours giving better one on one service with lower overhead structures that are licensed to do the same work as the bigger brands, using the same technology and mostly for a smaller cost - achieving you more from less.

Remember buyers are using technology to look for property, they are well informed with similar public information available to them. Don't be blinded by the flashy print magazine that is out of date as soon as it is published. Its all happening in real time , online, now.

Tech is driving how you sell and I believe we should be helping you and charging you less as you are probably doing alot more for alot less.

So in-conclusion for tonight. Technology is driving prices down - I have adapted my business to offer the same service for less being one of the first to disrupt real estate in HB. Not every person can sell their own home and people will still want people to do this. AI is not quite ready to sell it for you, but it is just around the corner.

Are you ready to support change in a wealthy industry slowing change?

Beautiful all white girl needing new home. Let me be your TV companion and slipper warmer! (Napier)

We are moving to the UK and having to leave our beautiful little girl behind.
Caer ( pronounced KIGH-YA) is a pure white cat that is scared of strangers but very loving once she trusts you. She keeps herself pristine and loves to curl up on slippers. She is a happy, healthy cat that likes peace and quiet - you’ll know when she wants attention though, she’ll make sure you pet her when you’re watching TV!
She comes from a home with a dog and another cat, but they tend to pick on her, so she prefers to be on her own.
Caer is 7 years old, Micro chipped and is speyed with all her shots up to date.
