Poll: Should New Zealand take in 1500 refugees? Is it enough?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The annual refugee quota will lift from 1000 to 1500 by July 2020, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced this week. Before 2016 the refugee quota sat static at 750 for 30 years, well behind many other western nations. The National Government then raised it to 1000. Is it enough?

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #455

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the people who were offended by this years' vanity cards. Please know that was never my goal. As always, each essay (blurb?) was written in the hopes that it might initiate a little conversation and laughter.* But, best laid plans, right? If by reading any of them you have concluded that I'm a horrible person, I hope you'll give me another chance. I think that if you got to know me, your loathing would melt away and, in time, blossom into indifference.

* In my imagination, the conversation and laughter would be something like:

"Heh, heh, that Lorre guy's kinda clever!"

"Yes - heh, heh - he just makes the words sing."

"Sing? Please. This is not literature. I mean, it's somewhat amusing, but let's face it, he clearly has a penchant for fancy words, sophomoric irony and cheap, vulgar jokes at the end of each card."

"I suppose you're right. Turn off the TV and I'll service you."

"Now you're talking!"

Storms that swept through Hawke's Bay last week have left road crews with ongoing clearance work on three major highways. Repair and removal crews are clearing slips across SH2 between Napier and Wairoa at several sites between Raupunga and Tangoio.

They are also clearing a section of the highway affected by a dropout in the Sandy Creek area near Tutira. Temporary speed restrictions and stop-go signalling is in place at the slip sites while a temporary traffic light system has been installed around the dropout zone. Motorists can expect some delays.

On SH5 between Napier and Taupo slip work is being carried out at sites between Eskdale and Tangoio and temporary speed restrictions are in place, with similar restrictions along parts of SH38 between Frasertown and Waikaremoana, which was also hit hard by slips.

At the Glencoe Gorge on SH50 there was a dropout and a temporary give way control is in place, although travel delays would be only slight.

Contractors are also carrying out seal-widening projects on the northern stretch of SH2 around Kotemaori and between Te Hauke and Te Aute on the southern stretch of SH2, and there will be occasional delays due to stop-go signalling and speed restrictions.

A resident of Whirinaki, just north of Napier, Glen Kohlis, noticed a discoloration in the sea on Saturday. He reported this to Hawke's Bay Regional Council and contacted the Pan Pac timber mill, which he believed likely to be responsible as he knew it's wastewater pipeline was in the vicinity.

It was initially thought to be an algal bloom but on Sunday it was confirmed to be wastewater from the mill's wastewater treatment plant. On Monday the mill's managing director Doug Ducker sent a letter to residents living nearby advising them that a section of pipeline "has sustained some form of damage or deterioration with small amounts of wastewater escaping". Divers were investigating the extent of the pipeline damage and "we recommend avoiding the area as divers continue to assess the situation using various equipment," he said.
