Tills were ringing from Marlborough to Southland as people enjoyed the warm weather and the chance to get away now the Covid-19 lockdown rules have been relaxed.

Kmart has confirmed it is reopening its Dunedin store, but for how long it will remain at its current site remains unclear.

The store is an anchor tenant of Meridian Mall on George St, the city's main shopping street, however it remained closed since the country went into nationwide lockdown.

The store would be closed for an additional two weeks, ''while we await engineering advice'', a spokeswoman says.

'Big increase' in library sign-ups during Covid-19 lockdown

Thousands signed up to borrow ebooks and audiobooks in the first week of lockdown alone, breaking some library records, and the ongoing restrictions saw numbers continue to soar.

Thousands signed up to borrow ebooks and audiobooks in the first week of lockdown alone, breaking some library records, and the ongoing restrictions saw numbers continue to soar.

In Dunedin, the number of ebooks and audiobooks borrowed rose 60 per cent compared to March 2019.

A total of 6980 ebooks and audiobooks were borrowed, compared with 4235 in the same period last year.

Throughout April, a further 13,727 were borrowed, a rise of 65 per cent compared to the 9024 borrowed in all of April and May 2019.
