Are you or children in your care dealing with some significant loss, grief or change in your life? Maybe we at Pukekohe Community Action can help you -- or maybe you can help us.

Pukekohe Community Action is about to start new Seasons for Growth programmes for both adults and children in the next couple of weeks.

Our Seasons programme this term will be running in two local primary schools and two local high schools and we also offer an after-school programme for children. Parents are welcome to attend a programme that runs at the same time as the after-school programme which helps resource them to support the children.

An evening adult programme will also be held.

Feedback from one parent:

“My son was reluctant at first and sat outside the room but now he really enjoys coming. He is now opening up and has been able to talk and express how he feels at times. My daughter has been excited to come each week.

Both of the children have learned so much including who their safe people are to talk to. I have already recommended this programme to three other people. Personally I will miss the same place to come to for the parent programme where I can talk with no judgment or expectation. It is nice to be reminded that doing your best is good enough.”

Of course we cannot run these programmes without a good team of volunteers. If you have a couple of spare hours in your week and would like to join a team of people who like to support others we would love to hear from you and have you as part of our Pukekohe Community Action (PCA) team, which has more than 30 people already assisting with programmes as volunteers.

Last year alone PCA had more than 450 people directly participating in programmes.

Full training will be provided.

If you would like to know more about these programmes, either to be a participant or to help facilitate, please email pukekohecommunityaction@xtra.co.nz or phone or text Jan on 0274521366.

Our Oasis family support group, offering music and play for preschoolers and their carers, is a great programme to follow on from our “Space for you and your baby” programme.

Oasis runs on Monday and Friday mornings from 9.30am until 11am.

One parent writes:

“We love the interaction both with parents, staff and children at Oasis. The variety of activities work well for my eldest child and the youngest. There is something for everyone to enjoy. I’ve found it a safe, supportive environment on my low days which was so important when I was suffering from post-natal depression. It was a perfect follow-on from Space.”

The support, activities, educational opportunities and the affordability compared with other activities during the week make it very supportive especially for the new parent.

Are you a new parent with your first baby? Would you like to meet with other people who are at the same stage of life as you?

Maybe we at Pukekohe Community Action can help you — or maybe you can help us.

We are starting a new group for our “Space for you and your baby” programme.

We do keep babies with others of similar age so at any time we have a group for babies aged 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months and 9 to 12 months.

If you have a new baby or are new to Pukekohe and looking for a group maybe this is a group for you.

One parent commented:

“My daughter and I love going to our Space group sessions! It’s nice to get out of the house and go to an environment that is safe, caring, helpful and loving. It’s nice to be able to chat with other parents that are experiencing similar happenings with their babies and being able to socialise my daughter with other children around her age.

"I have developed some new friends who I am sure will be friends for life. The programme has different topics each week which is awesome for exploring different things/ideas for helping me parent and helping my daughter develop and grow!”
