Kia ora neighbours,

A trial to switch car parks for outdoor seating on Edinburgh Street in Pukekohe has locals and businesses owners excited about the extra dining space, particularly for summer.

Eke Panuku Development Auckland installed dining tables with umbrellas, plus some benches, in front of Edinburgh St cafes and restaurants after the local businesses asked for help getting extra space for customers.

The team worked with the businesses owners to design the space outside Winner Winner, Hiroba Sushi and Kaos Café. Their work included levelling the space with platforms and installing planter boxes between the dining areas and the traffic.

These new spaces could be made permanent after a short summer trial if the businesses owners and locals want them to say.

Eke Panuku priority location director Richard Davison explained the team used light materials for the trial run but would opt for concrete and quality wood if the community wanted a year-round, permanent option, either in the current location or in other places too.

Permanent installations would be entirely funded by Eke Panuku, he said.

Davison said he and his team took lessons from last years’ trial with one way streets and reduced parking, which they applied to building this trial of outdoor seating.

He said he hopes the new seats go some way to energising the town centre and welcomes interest from other businesses who might be keen on something similar.

At Kaos Cafe on Monday, Dan Harris, Diana and Michele said they were loving the outdoor space, and said they had no trouble parking nearby, rather than right outside the cafe where they were now sitting.

Also on Eke Panuku’s radar is nearby Roulston Park. Consultations around improving the park will begin this month.

Check out these photos of the new development by Eke Panuku below:

Kia ora neighbours,

Campbell Tyson chartered accounting firm has turned 100 years old. It was first established as E D Wilkinson in 1922 in the Legal Chambers building in lower King Street, and in the last century has survived mergers, changes and more to become the largest firm in the district today.

To celebrate the milestone, CT management gave their nearly 70 staff $100 to spend on themselves from the local cafes and retailers in Pukekohe, near their new building on Wesley Street.

Director Kirsty Bullen, who joined the firm in 2012, said she believes CT has survived so long because the local community supports it so much.

"We’re very conscious of that and we give back as much as we can. And on top of that, it’s about the people. There has always been a sense of guardianship, and that you need to leave Campbell Tyson in a better place than what you find it in,” she said.

To last the next 100 years, CT will be evolving and changing, in particular to face the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic that confront both the firm and its clients, Bullen said.

“The communities we serve are quite special. We’re really lucky that we’re provincial. It’s a different type of accounting to the big city, you really have to understand what goes on here and you have to be involved,” Bullen said.

That’s why we’re so focused on giving back to the community.”

Kia ora neighbours,

After two successful fundraising campaigns in recent months, Franklin Hospice has an extra $55,000 in the budget to support people diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

Without an in-patient unit, Pukekohe-based Franklin Hospice’s six permanent nurses, two casual nurses and one social worker travel all over the district to deliver palliative care for patients.

Just last month, the hospice raised $32,000 through tickets and art sales to the Riverhaven Artland Summer Sculpture Weekend in Clevedon.

And for the eighth year in a row, Farmer’s held its annual Christmas Charity Campaign, and raised more than $908,000 for Hospice New Zealand, of which $22,000 went to the Franklin branch.

“We can’t thank the Farmers team and their customers enough for their generosity towards hospice,” said Hospice NZ acting chief executive officer Naylor Wayne.

“Raising over $900,000 is incredible, especially during a year where many felt the significant impact of Covid-19.”

But the ongoing work of fundraising goes on, Alison Daldy, Fundraising Manager of the Franklin Hospice explained.

The immense costs of running the hospice include maintaining cars, the office building, wages and medical equipment. And that is all before plans to build an inpatient unit for the district, Daldy said.

About half of Franklin Hospice’s bills are covered by government funding, but the rest comes from the community through events, bequests, payroll donations and the hospice second-hand store in Pukekohe.

Two big fundraisers are planned for 2022: a mystery midwinter event, and the Garden Ramble in November.
