After eight years of senior management roles at Tamaki Health and Counties Medical, and a stint as CEO of the Kate Edger Educational Charitable Trust, Marshall is excited to grow the hospice further.

“There is a growing need for this vital service, in challenging economic times,” Marshall said.

“I am excited to take up this role and ensure that we are able to meet demand and provide more for our patients and their whanau.”

Outgoing CE Ric Odom served the Hospice for five and a half years, as demand for its services more than doubled.

Three teachers at the New Zealand Modern School of Music Counties-Coromandel have been honoured for their decades of service to music students across Franklin.

Jane Jeffs started teaching piano, keyboard and music theory in 1982, the same year she got married. 40 years later, she is still hooked on the joy teaching music brings her students, she said.

She has taught at nine schools all over the region, and even taught multiple generations of the same families during the last four decades.

Lisa Adams has been teaching piano, keyboard and guitar for 35 years, and Jayne Woodham, has taught guitar for 25 years. Some of her students have gone on to become guitar teachers themselves.

The music school held a special concert in their honour at the Franklin Arts Centre on Saturday May 21, where the teachers also performed outside the gallery.

“I have always thought of Music Teaching as a job you should leave if you no longer enjoy anymore, as it is portrayed in your teaching,” Adams said.

“It has not always been plain sailing, but the positives have outweighed the negatives and after 35 years I can still say I enjoy teaching my pupils each week.”

Sarah Dobson, 25-year-old environment and sustainability technician at A.S. Wilcox, has won the Pukekohe Young Growers competition for 2022.

Up against three others from the region, Dobson beat out the rest across the day long competition at the Pukekohe Indian Association centre on Saturday May 21.

“I was so rapt when they called my name to say that I had won, I couldn’t believe it,” Dobson said.

“I’ve learnt so much through the competition. I even learnt how to back a tractor-trailer last week which came in handy today!”

The national Young Grower of the Year competition is in Nelson on September 21 and 22. There will be six other regional finalists competing for their share of $30,000 worth of prizes.

HortNZ President, Barry O'Neil said the competition was a bright spot amid hard times the region.

“The various lockdowns and weather events have been unprecedented. Many growers’ businesses are under pressure, so it has been fantastic to be able to get a record turnout at the awards dinner this year and bring everyone together,” he said.

“Our industry is looking to the future in these very challenging times. Young people will play a key role in our future with our industry’s development and sustainability.”

Girl Guiding New Zealand wants to open a new chapter in the growing Waikato town of Pōkeno, about five years since there were guiding activities there.

It is relaunching its Pōkeno presence with code GIRL Matariki, a full-day event where girls will programme a robot to draw the Matariki constellation, among other activities.

Local co-ordinators from the Te Kauwhata chapter Luci Fraser and Burnadette de Meyer are hoping families and parents would be keen to volunteer and help keep the Pōkeno chapter going.

"“The main thing that has kept us going and that I think will be great for Pōkeno is the stability for the girls,” Fraser said.

“Especially at the moment where there are lockdowns and a lot of people moving into Pōkeno, the lives of all these children are just so massively changing.

“Girl Guiding is that one constant, that safe place they can go to every week, whether it’s online or in person, it’s a safe consistent place that isn’t home or school.”

Would you volunteer for Girl Guiding or sign your daughters up?

We asked, listened, and collaborated directly with farmers in the making of this gear. We tested and re-tested in on-farm environments. We re-engineered what farming workwear can be with your needs front of mind.

We brought our decades of experience creating world-class performance gear. Add to that a legacy of Kiwi innovation, a challenger spirit and a practical attitude that’s been part of Line 7 since we started back in 1963.

Every detail has been reviewed and refined – without overlooking the obvious. Breathable, flexible, functional and comfortable, while still being supremely durable and waterproof. Made to fit farmers of all shapes and sizes, with a dedicated range for women. Built to last, and last a bit longer still, with an included repair kit that means you can fix it up quickly yourself.

Now take it out there, try it on and put it to the test. Wear it out and wear it again. We’re pretty damn confident you won’t be disappointed
