For many of us it is onion pickers, backs bent over the brown soil in the surrounding fields.
Now this annual part of our rural heritage has been celebrated in art.
Iokapeta Magele-Suamasi has contributed Onion Picker, a mixed media installation which is a centrepiece to the Heterodox Us exhibition at the Franklin Arts Centre.
For many school holidays in the 1970s and 1980s Magele-Suamasi would come with her parents and seven siblings to toil in the onion and potato fields around Franklin.
It has left an indelible memory, which she transformed into an artwork which has in turn evoked memories and started conversations among gallery visitors.
Two rows of onion sacks run through the gallery, each emblazoned with anecdotes shared by Magele-Suamasi’s siblings when she told them she was creating this work.
They capture the hard work of picking: ‘‘Everything and everyone smells like onions’’; ‘‘and then the sound of onion clippers all day until sunset’’ but also the sense of family and togetherness that the days of picking brought: ‘‘glass gallon bottles filled with orange cordial drinks’’ and ‘‘pain, endurance, teamwork, pride.’’

Everyone knows Kiwis are very creative and clever. This exhibition is a part of a project that offers a fun challenge to artists & participants by turning an existing item heading to the dumpster into something new by recycling those used items. Thus, turning something ‘meh’ into something ‘Wow’.
Our artists created useable items visitors can buy or view. This project also encourages artists to rework a painting that was lacklustre into something they can be proud to show.
Visitors are welcome to dress up and pose with the items on show while photographers on hand will record the event.
Free entry. All welcome!
Our cattery Downton Tabby at Mangatawhiri is now closed as we have sold our property. We have surplus cat/pet baskets, beds, blankets, climbing frames, feeding bowls. Preferably to be uplifted in one lot, before 19th June. Please contact Donna 021 118 6059.

There are expected squally thunderstorms alongside heavy rain and hail, as well as a possible small tornado. There is some risk that the thunderstorm will become severe with localised downpours of 25 to 35 mm/h, 110 km/h wind gusts, and the chance of a localised damaging tornado.
Low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys with this intensity of rainfall may cause flash flooding and/or slips. This will make the driving conditions hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility due to the rain. Wind gusts of this strength, and damaging tornadoes can cause structural damage, including trees and power lines.
The weather watch is in place until 6pm tonight but any changes will be reported on the MetService website.
