Our Feathered Friend this week is the red-crowned parakeet/kākāriki.
The photos are from Rosa Marie who took her camera to Zealandia to see one only of the only mainland populations in New Zealand.
Although they are widely distributed throughout the New Zealand region, and are very common on some islands, they are almost entirely absent from the two main islands.
One exception is Wellington, where birds from Zealandia and Matiu/Somes Islands are occasionally seen in suburban gardens.

We will be receiving a bulk load of tomatoes next week and a large group of volunteers will be turning this into passata sauce as a base for future cooking sessions.
Recently local charity shops kindly donated preserving jars for this project but we now required screw lids and seals.

The tractor and bulldozer were donated by a local farmer and installed by the Masterton Lions Club in May 1961.
A report to the council notes there have been few reports of injury but the equipment does not meet modern playground standards.

Masterton residents are outraged over plans to remove two popular attractions from a children's playground.
The Masterton District Council is proposing to remove a bulldozer and tractor which have been features of the Kids Own Playground since 1961.
A report to councillors said both pieces of equipment are in poor condition and are potentially dangerous to children.
“Whilst there are minimal reports of injury or incidents over the past five years, the equipment no longer meets today's playground safety standards,” the report said.
