In this blog we discuss the most common upholstery problems that can arise in use. We will break each problem down, looking at what it is, the likely cause and recommended remedies and solutions to avoid future re-occurrence.

CROCKING: What is it? Crocking is the term used to describe the transfer of excess dye from one surface to another due to rubbing and friction. The issue is increased by certain atmospheric conditions such as humidity and temperature.

Likely cause: In a situation where the dye is transferring out of the upholstery fabric (for instance a red fabric is turning pink) it will usually be a result of either poor quality dyes used during textile manufacturing or that the dyes were not set correctly during the dyeing and finishing process. Crocking can also occur when dye is transferred from an outside source onto the upholstery fabric, for instance a pair of new jeans can transfer blue dye on to your sofa giving it a grubby appearance.

Remedy: The key thing to establish with crocking is whether the discolouration is due to dye transferring out of your upholstery fabric or on to it from an external source. If it is transferring out of the fabric then it is important to check that some substance e.g. a solvent based product, has not come into contact with the fabric and affected the dyes. If all of the above can be ruled out then a genuine fabric issue may be the cause and the fabric will need to be replaced from another batch or alternative fabric.

FADING: What is it? Discolouration or lightening of the dye in a fabric due to exposure to ultraviolet light. Constant exposure to high levels of direct ultraviolet light can also result in fibre degradation, causing the fabric fibres to become brittle, which may result in areas of breakage.

Are class sizes too big these days?

Primary, secondary and kindergarten teachers are striking this week as they look for a pay offer that meets inflation at 7.2% and makes concessions around staffing issues - in particular, student to teacher ratios.

A ratio of 1 teacher for 23 students applies for year 11 students, however support staff can be counted as teachers so the reality is that class sizes can be much higher.
What do you think are the ideal sizes for classrooms?

Monarch butterfly caterpillars

Creek from Naenae

This seems very unlikely but if anyone has any spare room on a swan plant or two, there are a dozen or more monarch caterpillars about to starve on the corner of Bella Grove and Rimu St in Naenae. A single, small, swan plant on the public side of someone's fence on that corner has had the butterfly eggs laid on it.

Now the stripey wee things are all over it, it has zero leaves left, and only maybe two of the caterpillars are big enough that they will be able to go and metamorphose into butterflies if they are lucky.

It's a dire situation that probably doesn't have a happy ending. Maybe it is survival of the fittest but it's sad.

I'm not on Neighbourly heaps and won't check my messages or the replies, but I'm just putting this out here in case anyone can rescue the caterpillars by taking them to the only food they will eat: swan plant.

A large slip has come down in Lower Hutt, rupturing a gas line and taking out powerlines. Officers responded to calls of a landslip in Point Howard on Howard Point Rd about 9.50am today. Residents have been urged to stay indoors as the landslip has taken a chunk out of the residential road.

Wellington Water said the slip was caused by a burst water pipe last night and when it was assessed this morning it had dislodged a power pole.

“Fire and Emergency are on-site as the power lines are arcing on the road, and the road is closed. The slip has also caused a breach in a gas line, and the team is awaiting attendance from the Gas Utility.”

There is also a further leak on the drinking water pipe, but it cannot be repaired until the other utilities recommend it’s safe.

FENZ shift manager Chris Dalton says five fire service vehicles are there including three trucks and fire services are still working on trying to isolate the gas.

What you need to know:
- The council said there had been no deaths or injuries as a result of the slip.
- Fire and emergency were urging people to stay inside their homes while they assessed the situation to ensure power and gas services were safe.
- The council asked residents to conserve water, avoid flushing toilets and other unnecessary water usage.
- Houses have been evacuated and people are urged to avoid Howard Rd at Point Howard.

If any residents have safety concerns, they should call 111 immediately.
