The Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust is trying to raise $10,000 for an aviary for injured Kererū.
The WBRT has been operating a bird rehabilitation hospital located in 24 hectares of farmland in Ohariu, near Johnsonville, for many years,
It treats over 1,000 birds a year, taking in all types of native and non-native birds who have been injured or orphaned. This includes over 80 injured Kererū brought in annually by the community.
These big birds are much-loved and seen in increasing numbers in suburban areas, but unfortunately are often injured by cars, window strike, power lines, and by predators such as rats and stoats.

Work is planned to start next year, ready for the arrival of two bigger, and more environmentally friendly ferries from 2025.

The Interislander is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, so let’s create an arrival experience to match.

Our About Space programme is bringing back the Re-Tree exhibition for Christmas on High 2021!

We’re looking for creative individuals or community groups to make Christmas trees from recycled material - you might be an artist, or just love Christmas 🎅

Your masterpiece will be part of a free pop-up exhibition, running from 6-23 December in a vacant store in the CBD.

Preferably you’ll be designing with your own found materials, but we have some limited vouchers for Earthlink to get some tree-makers started with reused materials. We also have some mini-trees, made from off-cuts from our annual Street Trees to be your canvas for painting or decoration 🎨

If this sounds like you, email aboutspace@huttcity.govt.nz to find out how to get involved.
