The move comes after much public debate on the appropriateness of firearms being brought into schools, including when soldiers taught children as young as nine how to assemble and shoot assault rifles at a leadership exercise in Palmerston North last year. Rose is a singer, songwriter and musical comedian who’s been writing songs and stories for as long as she can remember. She’s been performing as a singer/songwriter since 2007, has written three musicals and was a semi-finalist in the 2018 Wellington RAW Comedy Quest. Friday 17 August - Rudy Castañeda López
Rudy Castañeda López is a celebrated artist and writer that grew up in Whittier, California, USA and moved to New Zealand in 1986. He’s taught in secondary and tertiary art education in various placements around New Zealand up until 2014. He has two published novels, The Song of Laughing Bird (National Pacific Press, 2005) and Open Your Eyes, Jackson Ryder (Escalator Press, 2015). López’s short story Life Class earned him the Honour Award in the New Zealand Writing School Short Story Competition in 2013. Since 2014, López has been focussing on writing full-time.

They had lived outside and never really got enough … View moreThey were four pregnant mums that the Upper Hutt Animal Rescue Society took out of a house of 15 cats. They were put into foster care to have their kittens and also to get used to humans. They had seen humans, but had never been patted or cuddled. They had lived outside and never really got enough food. Well that changed in their foster homes. Lexie is one of those mums.
Lexi’s previous foster carer taught Lexie how to allow humans to pat her and to not be scared being around humans.
She went back to the Haven ready for adoption. But she really couldn’t cope with being up there and withdrew into her shell. So Lexie has gone to another foster home and what a change. She is fantastic. She loves to be patted and will come when you call (well sometimes – definitely if she wants food – ha ha). She loves her toys – and she loves all the other cats’ toys.
She wanders around the house and likes being in the room with the humans. She is ready for her forever home.
Although two young children (2 and 4 yrs) visited for a couple of weeks ago. The noise and running around was not Lexie’s idea of a good time. She would be better suited to a home with a couple, (or single person), and if there were children – they would need to be older children.
She has the softest meow – but loud purr and is adorable.

The conference is set to be a good one, with speakers from Wellington City Council, Upper Hutt Animal Rescue Society, Outpawed and Cat Rescue Dunedin. We will also have an interactive TNR workshop for anyone wanting to learn about trapping.
The conference is not just aimed at rescuers, it is also a brilliant opportunity for members of our community to learn how to help their community cats and meet the people who can help you along the way.
