What do you think of our current warning system - could it be improved? And how can we get more people invested in safety? Comments may be used in the Hutt News unless you state otherwise with NFP (not for print)

The heavy rain yesterday has caused wastewater overflows from all Wellington Water wastewater treatment plants last night (Moa Point, Western, Seaview and Porirua). These overflows are partially treated wastewater, highly diluted and are discharged at normal discharge points.

There has also been overflows from a number of wastewater pumping stations and manholes throughout the entire region.

Please keep out of any flood water as it may be contaminated with wastewater or surface pollution (as well as possibly hiding hazards such as open manholes or ditches). If you see issues, call Council on 570 6666 to report it.

Please avoid swimming or collecting seafood from harbours, rivers and streams for 48 hours after heavy rain.
