Every Friday night between 9.30 pm and midnight, upwards of 70 teenagers and adults gather at the Walter Nash Centre in Taita for Twilight Basketball.

It began in February to give rangatahi/teenagers something fun and free to do on a Friday night. After the first nine weeks, 666 people had attended, with an average of 74 teenagers, parents, police, Council staff and volunteers turning up each time for some fierce competition and BBQed sauasages.

And not that anybody was eavesdropping, but from the overheard conversation file: one young guy to his mate: "I like coming here cos there’s always visitors like police, those guys in yellow (Safe City Ambassadors) and some other guys who don’t know how to play but they have fun." His mate replied: “yeah, we beat them nearly every time cos we know how to play, but it’s cool cos they want to play with us.’

Pop in and see what it's all about and you might find yourself on a court or cooking up some sausages for the hungry players. Pictured: some teenagers wearing playing bibs donated by Crest Clean, who also donate the sausages, bread and sauces every week.

Lower Hutt residents now have four weeks to have their say on how they elect their councillors and how they are represented at ward and community level.

Hutt City Council is reviewing how Lower Hutt residents are represented at Council, in preparation for the 2019 local body elections.

Council recently agreed to a draft proposal that would maintain the current way the Mayor and Councillors are elected and the present structure of community boards and panels. However, it proposes a review of community panels, which were established last year, in three years to gauge their effectiveness at representing their communities. The review was originally scheduled in six years’ time.

The final shape of representation arrangements in Lower Hutt will depend on formal public submissions over the next month.

To view the draft proposal and make a submission, go to huttcity.govt.nz/representation

Submissions close at 5pm on 3 September 2018. Council will then decide whether to amend its proposal or not. The final representation proposal will then be publically notified and people have the opportunity to lodge an appeal or objection.

With winter bugs doing the rounds, it’s worth knowing what the rules are about sick leave. So what are you entitled to?

• In general you’re entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave each year after you’ve worked for your employer for 6 months.
• You can accumulate any unused sick leave up to a total of 20 days.
• Sick leave can be used when you’re sick or when you need to be off work to look after someone else who is sick or injured (your partner, child, or someone who relies on you for care).
• Even if you’re a part-time or casual worker, you’re still entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave a year (once you’ve worked for 6 months continuously or for an average of 10 hours per week, and at least one hour in every week or 40 hours in every month).
• Your employer can require you to provide a medical certificate if you’re sick for 3 or more days in a row, and you’ll need to pay to get it. If they want proof of sickness sooner then they will have to pay the costs of getting the proof.

These are the minimum sick leave entitlements. Your employer can agree to give you more.

Check out our website for more information about sick leave and other employment rights and responsibilities. If you’ve got questions get in touch with a CAB near you, call us on 0800 367 222 (0800 FOR CAB), or contact us online.

This is one of Upper Hutt’s most popular bush tracks, starting from Tulsa Park in Totara Park and heading up the hill via the zig- zag to the trig. It’s also one of the main walking access routes into Akatarawa Forest so respect all signage as some of the walk is on private land.

No dogs are allowed due to farming and people should also watch out for vehicles, logging trucks and mountain bikers, although with 15,000 hectares in this park there is plenty of room for everyone.
