The number of feral deer being shot on Lower Hutt’s suburban margins has more than doubled, while residents report increasing damage to the bush.
A report presented to the Hutt City Council’s Climate Change and Sustainability Committee showed 57 deer were culled in the 2020/2021 financial year, up from 25 in the previous period. The committee doubled its culling budget of $15,000, which was unchanged from the last two years, to $30,000. Culling is administered by Greater Wellington Regional Council.
