Kia ora neighbours. Right turns onto SH16 from Coatesville-Riverhead Hwy in Kumeū will be banned from May.

Waka Kotahi NZTA said the right turn ban is an interim solution to improve safety at the intersection while a roundabout is designed, consented and built.

There were 39 crashes at the intersection, including one serious crash and at least three fatal crashes, between 2010 and 2020, according to Waka Kotahi data.

Those wanting to turn right can instead detour down Old Railway Rd to use the roundabout at the intersection of SH16 and Old North Rd.

The local MP and local board chair were both critical of Waka Kotahi for failing to build the roundabout, which is still in its design phase.

With overseas tourists set to return to NZ shortly, we're looking at doing a light-hearted piece on the odd questions Kiwis have been asked about NZ. Have you ever been asked anything surprising about NZ? Feel free to message me or comment below. Please put 'NFP' (not for publication) in your comment if you do not want it or your name included in the article. Thanks very much for your help and happy travels.

A real novelty for many people – this is the natural form of honey, just as the bees make it. Honeybees build comb cells out of wax and store their honey in it, covering it over with more wax once the honey is ready. The wax is safe to eat but it does get stuck in your teeth – so many people spit that out!

Discounts for mix-and-match purchases of 4+ items of potted honey or honey comb.
