Women in south Auckland are invited to get free advice about breast health next week.

Specialist nurses will be available to chat on board the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ's iconic pink caravan Pinkie.

Pinkie will be at the following sites from 9 am to 2.30 pm each day:

Countdown, Pukekohe South on March 22, Pak'nSave, Pukekohe on March 23 and New World Papakura on March 24.

Emilie Petitdemange, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s Pink Caravan Coordinator said Pinkie goes on an annual education tour around New Zealand and the foundation was thrilled to be visiting south Auckland this month.

"It's a great chance to talk about mammograms, get advice about checking your breasts, and learn how you can reduce your breast cancer risk. "

One of Pinkie’s star attractions is Bessie, a life-like torso which shows the visible signs of breast cancer.

"Many women are often surprised to learn what a lump actually feels like, so we urge everyone to come along and find out for themselves," Petitdemange said.

Last year Pinkie was adapted to be Covid-safe, meeting social distancing and hygiene requirements, with face masks and disposable gloves available to visitors.

About 335 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in Counties Manukau DHB area every year, and about 50 will die from it, she said.

“Our breast nurses are trained professionals who can give expert advice about symptoms, treatments, support groups and post-surgery options.

"Anyone who can’t visit Pinkie in person is welcome to call our free nurse advice line on 0800 BC NURSE (0800 226 8773)."

Another Auckland suburb has come under fire for unattractive tree pruning.

Waterview’s Alford St made headlines last week after residents complained the trees had been cut into unsightly V-shapes by Auckland Council contractor Treescape.

Doria Johnson, who lives on Scott Rd in Papakura, said the trees on her road have had the same treatment, from the same contractor.

Every single tree has been cut down the middle to avoid the power lines, she said.

“It’s not just my tree, it's the entire street ... It looks like a nightmare, it's disgusting.”

Hi Neighbouring businesses,

The Government's decision to drop Auckland to alert level 1 was announced at 11.30 am on Friday.

Read how the timing of releasing the decision has affected an Auckland business in this story by Thomas Coughlan and John Anthony:

An Auckland restaurant owner says she will have to write off up to $15,000 in revenue for the week due to the Government’s decision to delay announcing when the city will move down alert levels.

A “preliminary decision” on whether to move from alert level 2 restrictions to level 1 was made Thursday evening, but the Government decided to wait until 11.30am on Friday to announce that from 12pm Auckland would move down to level 1.

Chand Sahrawat, co-owner of Auckland restaurants Cassia, Sidart and Sid at The French Cafe, said due to the delay in alert level change she would need to write off $10,000 to $15,000 in revenue for the week.

At alert level 2 her restaurants must operate one server per table, which slows down service, and have two metres between tables, resulting in the restaurants being able to operate at only 50 per cent capacity, she said.

"The whole process just slows down."

Without a warning on when alert levels would change the restaurants were not able to take forward bookings or order in the food they required because suppliers did not deliver ingredients on a weekend, she said.

Also, if they ordered ingredients but the move to level 1 did not go ahead when predicted then that could result in about $5000 of wasted ingredients, she said.

Chand said the Government seemed to move quickly into lockdown but took a long time to move down alert levels.

Lighting around Papakura train station will be enhanced after the local board allocated nearly $70,000 to three transport projects.

A new bus shelter will be installed outside Rosehill Intermediate and way-finding signage will be erected at the station.

The shelter has been allocated $40,000, the signage $11,000, and safety lighting in the laneways closest to the station $18,799.

Board chair Brent Catchpole said the shelter would cater for a high number of school students and give them a safer area to wait for the bus.

A 2018 report revealed lighting issues near the town centre, including laneways with little lighting, he said.

“We will be able to install modern lighting to a number of sites.

“Better lighting is going to make people feel more confident walking in and around the station and we want to do our part to support residents using the train to take cars off our streets.”
