The current “harden up, stay staunch and let’s not talk about it” attitude is a problem. By changing this attitude, lives will be saved. Every dollar raised enables Mike to continue his vital work with communities across NZ.

"Anyone now considering a coastal property should know what sea level rise is. If they already own one, they shouldn't be surprised if buyers expect to know how it might affect them. It's time to accept these properties may come with some risk. It's an inconvenient truth, but it appears that the value of flood-prone property will go down and many coastal towns will face a new threat. "

Yet why has Kaiaua and much of the seabird coast been left with virtually zero protection? Surely past flood events have supplied more than sufficient warnings.

Hauraki Plains farms, Thames CBD and our coastal settlements, will without any doubt, be increasingly threatened by the now accelerating rate of sea level rise combined with our locally subsiding lands. Will we be the poster child of best defences or that of a miserly and cowardly retreat from the sea. I suspect other low lying regions of NZ will watch us with enormous interest.
Although I have been following the climate change science for decades; being a newcomer here, I was totally ignorant regarding the subsidence risks of our plains.
