An Invercargill fire investigator is urging the public to be alert saying lives are being put in danger through a rise in suspicious fires in the city.

Fire and Emergency has attended at least eight suspicious fires. One included someone stuffing a piece of paper into a wall at Southland Hospital and lighting it. Another fire was lit outside Reading Cinemas while people were inside.

If you see fire or anything suspicious, please call the fire brigade.
