Big Glory Bay oyster farmers on Stewart Island have been paid out nearly $2.5 million in compensation after being forced to close their businesses.

The Ministry for Primary Industries made the decision to remove all the farmed oysters from the bay in 2017, after the deadly Bonamia ostreae parasite was detected on oyster farms in the area.

It's unlikely oyster farms will ever return to Big Glory Bay but would you like to see another farm in the south?

Hi Neighbours

Our littlest people need your help. Poverty doesn’t start at 5, but until now there’s been no nationwide programme to help preschoolers who are hungry and cold.

KidsCan is changing that. They’re delivering raincoats, shoes and five fresh meals a week to 25 early childhood centres. Attendance is up, and the children are happier and more settled.

"Everyone has the same meal so children don't feel like they have less," Manaia View Kindergarten teacher Kathy Belz says. "It's upholding everyone's mana.”

40 more centres are waiting for help. KidsCan, Stuff and Neighbourly have partnered up to raise enough money to support 1000 more children - and we need 400 more generous Kiwis to hold little hands. To support a child, sign up at KidsCan.org.nz

Do your children, grandchildren and friends know the defining moments of your life? Do they know the day you laughed so hard you cried? Do they know your proudest achievement or your favourite teacher?

We plan for so many events in our life, but sadly New Zealanders don’t appear so keen to plan for their funeral. As Funeral Directors, every day we see the struggle families have when trying to make the decisions which will best honour their loved one’s life.

Take the Time to Talk is a campaign by the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) to encourage people to spend time sharing their life stories and talking about final farewells. The sharing of your life story isn’t something that has to be done in your absence, don’t leave it up to someone else to tell your story – do it now, when you can enjoy being a part of the conversation.

Why not take one piece of stress away from your family by letting them know your story and wishes ahead of time. When the time comes, these conversations can be translated to plan a meaningful gathering to remember and celebrate your life . The discussions can help your family make important decisions about how they wish to remember and honour you.

The staff at Avenal Park Funeral Home can assist you with your arrangements.

We are located at 75 Fox Street, Invercargill or ring us on 03 218 9021 and we can come and visit you.

Discover your rights with the CAB!

Sacha Green from Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand

Do you know what your rights are at work? How about your rights to do with renting or owning a home? If you buy something that’s faulty do you know what your options are? This CAB Awareness Week from 8-14 April you’re being invited to Discover Your Rights – Tūhuratia ō motika!

Helping people to know what their rights and responsibilities are and how they can act on these is core to what the Citizens Advice Bureau is about. We help people from all walks of life to access the information they need so they are empowered to take next steps and to resolve their problems.

A highlight of this year’s Awareness Week is the launch of the CAB’s new public website - www.cab.org.nz.... After a year of development and user testing, the resulting website provides an accessible, mobile-friendly, knowledgebase of 2,000 questions and answers about people’s rights that are based on real issues confronted by clients.

The information about rights is grounded in the law but is practical and is expressed in a way that’s easy to understand.

The website also provides a directory of more than 30,000 community organisations so that the CAB can help connect people with any additional services they need.

We’re keen to break down any barriers people face in finding out what their rights are. Our new website is a fantastic resource for the whole community, and complements the amazing face-to-face and phone service provided by our skilled and dedicated volunteers.

We invite you to Discover Your Rights with us this Awareness Week by checking out our new website www.cab.org.nz..., calling us 0800 367 222, or by visiting your local CAB. We’re here to help.
