It would be so much easier if we could just lift the top of the head and use a bottle brush! Unfortunately with ears it’s not that easy - one needs a microscope and light and a good level of experience to know what you are looking at and how to approach the job.

Even Anne, our ear nurse practitioner, without thinking, scratched her ear some years back, which resulted in full-on outer ear infection - nasty, painful and unnecessary!

These are all the wrong ways to clear your ears:

Keys, pens, screwdriver etc - dirty and sharp

Cotton bud - this will result in the wax being pushed deep in the canal and/or onto the Tympanic membrane (ear drum). They often break-off and remain lodged in the ear.

Finger or finger nail - bacteria can enter a break in the skin – infection can easily occur.

Water syringing - pressure in the canal can cause irritation and pain. Wax can be forced onto the ear drum, it’s a messy and time consuming process. But most of all, if you have every suffered an ear drum perforation (a whole in the ear drum) or have scarring on the ear drum from repetitive ear infections pressure in this area is definitely is no advised as the membrane is likely to be compromised already!

Micro suction is the safe way to remove wax from your ears, enquire today.

Hi guys, took a little action and planted some spare plants in the reserve a couple of weeks back.
Tauroa reserve is very special to us at Property Brokers as we lost our lovely colleague Megan Nation a few months back in a tragic accident.
The Hastings City Council has had a huge chop up of old Pines and Gums which had blown over in the last storm and is undergoing a slow transformation.
Many thanks to Rowan and Tamsin who also planted some of there own native seedlings!!

Full length thermal curtains needed

Does anyone have any (cheap) 2m drop thermal curtains they don't need anymore? I'm so cold I don't even care if they are mismatched.

I've just moved into a house that has beautiful sun exposure but is freezing at night. I have a heat pump on 23℃, but there is an un draped aluminium glass door right next to it and a wall right in front of it, so there is virtually no heating at night. The curtains on the other windows are all short and summer weight, and I suspect, there is no insulation in the ceiling, despite the slab of polystyrene I can see through the hole in the attached garage ceiling. I managed to acquire a set of thermals for my sons room but the rest of the house is beyond me.

Whoever put the heat pump in should be hung drawn and quartered. They could only have put it in a worse place by putting it in the garage.

I think I'm also going to have to get a window vac. 3 hours with the windows open and they are still soaking wet.

Do you know what sick leave you’re entitled to?

With winter bugs doing the rounds, it’s worth knowing what the rules are about sick leave. So what are you entitled to?

• In general you’re entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave each year after you’ve worked for your employer for 6 months.
• You can accumulate any unused sick leave up to a total of 20 days.
• Sick leave can be used when you’re sick or when you need to be off work to look after someone else who is sick or injured (your partner, child, or someone who relies on you for care).
• Even if you’re a part-time or casual worker, you’re still entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave a year (once you’ve worked for 6 months continuously or for an average of 10 hours per week, and at least one hour in every week or 40 hours in every month).
• Your employer can require you to provide a medical certificate if you’re sick for 3 or more days in a row, and you’ll need to pay to get it. If they want proof of sickness sooner then they will have to pay the costs of getting the proof.

These are the minimum sick leave entitlements. Your employer can agree to give you more.

Check out our website for more information about sick leave and other employment rights and responsibilities. If you’ve got questions get in touch with a CAB near you, call us on 0800 367 222 (0800 FOR CAB), or contact us online.

Is anyone interested in stitching together old socks to make pet blankets for the SPCA? I have a small pile and no talent or patience for the task.

I knew a lady years ago who used to do it, because it saved throwing out socks that could still be used, and it gave the SPCA bedding for rescue animals. At $1 per pair for socks, it's cheaper to replace than repair them these days, so the piles grow.

If anyone has the time, patience and talent to do it, I'm happy to collect them (clean please).

Please be advised, if not already aware, the teachers and principals of many schools around NZ, including Te Mata, are going out on strike for the day, on Wednesday 15th August.

They do not choose to do this lightly. And whether you support the decision or not, you need to ensure arrangements are made for your children on that date, as there will be no staff at school to care for them.

If you are a stay at home parent, perhaps you could have a special bonding day, doing something totally different. Have a cafe day, or a spa day, or a trip to the MTG or The Faraday Centre, in Napier. Flip Out will be open as will the Museum and Art gallery in Hastings. Have a mid winter picnic up in the Redwoods. Or a trip to Birdwoods Gallery. How about taking in a movie? Maybe you could organise a tour of the fire station or police station. Or you could get out old sheets and build a fort in your lounge, or have a movie marathon and enjoy home made baking together. If it's not too wet, giant chalk and hot wheels (for boys and girls) works a treat. Or, if it is wet, water pistols followed by hot chocolates.

If you are a working parent, perhaps you could organise with a friend or one of your childrens' classmates parents to have them take your child for the day, in exchange for you taking theirs on a weekend day.

Whatever your situation, don't stress, you can do this. If you get stuck for ideas, put a shout out to me and I'll post a notice for you. We'll see you right. That's what we are here for.

Let me know what ideas you have. We'll see who can come up with the best, eh?!

And don't forget, there will be no Pita Pit orders on that day 😉, but Friday Treats will still be on.
