But, I feel faith is pointless, without practical purpose. Especially if it involves spending money sending thoughts and prayers, instead of donating to worthy, desperate causes, such as the cyclone relief funds, that are so sorely needed at the moment.
I just took a stamped, posted, envelope out of my letterbox, with a lovely, handwritten letter, offering me “comforting thought from the scriptures”, and I wonder how much money did that kind person spend to send me, a complete stranger (envelope addressed “To The Resident”) and however many others these missives.
At $1.70 postage, per letter, plus the envelope and paper, and printed flyer, that’s potentially a lot of “thoughts” that could have put food on tables or bedrolls under bodies. Would that not have been a better option, than randomly sending people quotes from the scriptures?
My priest, growing up Catholic, would tell us every Wednesday at bible practice “turn your hands to practical matters and your hearts to spiritual”. And he’d follow that up with the simple explanation “Do something useful”.
So, dear people, rather than preach about how the big G cares about us, show you care about others, and live your faith, practically. If you can’t physically help, don’t waste money preaching, use it to help. Don’t be the preacher on the cliff who let the boy fall, because God loved him. Turn your hands to practical matters, and your hearts to faith!
And if your church is footing the bill, there’s better things they can do with the money too.
Keep the faith, but, please, do something practical. I don’t need saving, but thousands really do.

From now until Saturday morning, expect 150 to 200mm of rain about the ranges and also away from the ranges north of Hastings (this includes the Esk Valley area and the Wairoa District), and 75 to 100mm elsewhere. The heaviest falls are likely from 3pm Friday, with peak rates of 20 to 30mm/h possible.
Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
Keep up to date with the changing weather on the MetService website.

Kia ora koutou, we are expecting some heavy rain around the region over the next couple of days, and we understand after #CycloneGabrielle people will be feeling anxious about this! Here is what we know:
The latest weather in Hawkes Bay:
🔶🌧️HEAVY RAIN WARNING🌧️🔶
MetService New Zealand has now issued a heavy rain warning for Hawkes Bay
Period: 48hrs from 10am Thu, 23 Feb - 10am Sat, 25 Feb
Forecast: Expect 150 to 200mm of rain about the ranges and also away from the ranges north of Hastings (this includes the Esk Valley area and the Wairoa District), and 75 to 100mm elsewhere. The heaviest falls are likely from 3pm Friday, with peak rates of 20 to 30mm/h possible.
Expected impact:
➡️Rivers and streams could rise rapidly.
➡️Surface flooding and slips are possible.
➡️Existing silt deposits may become saturated.
➡️Driving conditions may be hazardous, avoid unnecessary travel.
⚠️ KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE FORECAST ON THE METSERVICE WEBSITE⚠️ www.metservice.com...
⚠️Please keep a close eye on rivers and take extreme caution around areas where rivers have cut a new channel or where stopbanks have been damaged.
⚠️Be aware that silt may become saturated, take caution around large deposits of silt which could shift or collapse.
⚠️There could be localised ponding, this is small areas of flooding due to rain, rather than rivers
WHAT TO DO: STAY SAFE, STAY INFORMED, HAVE A PLAN, ACT QUICKLY IF YOU SEE RISING WATER.
➡️ Be prepared, talk with your whānau or household about what you will do and where you will go if you need to evacuate.
➡️ Stay away from rivers and out of harms way.
➡️ Have a grab bag ready with supplies you will need if you have to leave home in a hurry.
➡️ Never try to walk, swim, or drive through flood water.
➡️ Check on your neighbours, vulnerable family members and anyone who might need your help.
➡️ Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. In an emergency, call 111.

“Quick update of Rubbish and Recycling as at February 20, 5.00pm.
• Kerbside wheelie bin collections re-started today (Monday 20 February).
• Henderson Road Transfer Station is now open to the public to dispose of waste, residential green waste and residential recycling. Fees apply to dispose of waste. The transfer station is open from 7.45am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday and 9.45am to 4.30pm on Sunday.
• Residential recycling can be dropped off at Henderson Road transfer station.
• Rural recycling stations are not open until we can check them. We will update the community when they are ready to be used.
• The Kerbside recycling collection (crates) has not resumed and we do not have a date for this resuming. Recycling to be held on-site if safe to do so. (Contractors are busy and in some cases their facilities are damaged and need to be repaired before they can operate fully again).
• Flood damaged household waste: For those dealing with flood damaged waste people who are insured should contact their insurer about the options available to them, depending on their policy and the process for assessing and disposing of flood damaged waste.”
Cheers all
