If the Government accepts the condition, Mayor Andrew King wants the cheaper houses to be for first-home buyers.

Police and the NZ Transport Agency are asking everybody traveling these school holidays to plan ahead, take regular breaks, and stay safe on our roads.

During five days over the school holidays last year, 6-10 October 2017, 15 lives were lost on our roads. The total deaths for the whole month was 32. “If the same thing happens this year, we are going to have 32 people die in October. Who is it going to be, you, a member of your family, a friend, or one of your colleagues?” says Sandra Venables, Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing.

NZ Transport Agency acting Director Safety and Environment Lisa Rossiter agrees. “If you’re going away with your family these school holidays, ensure you are well rested before you set off, and ensure your focus is driving safely on the roads.

“Watch your speed and following distances, make sure you’re driving fresh and alert, don’t get distracted by the kids in the back or by your phone, and make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt"

An update from Hamilton City Council on roading/safety construction in our area of town:

Work starts this week at Wairere Dr on the first of $4.5M of road safety improvements planned for the city this year.

A range of safety improvements, including pedestrian traffic light crossings, refuge islands, raised crossings, intersection safety improvements, cycle safety upgrades, footpath widening, and new safety guardrails will be implemented.

Work will start on Thursday at the Wairere Dr/Gordonton Rd roundabout to improve safety for both walkers and cyclists, a new section of safety guardrail will be installed on Gordonton Rd for a new cycle entry point and section of shared path, which will link to the network of shared paths under the busy intersection.

Later this week on the other side of the intersection similar work will be completed on Crosby Rd just before it joins Wairere Dr, with the safety guardrail extended close to Ruby Ct, widening of the off-road shared path, and installation of a new cycle entry point.

From early October construction will start at the intersection of Wairere Dr/Huntington Dr (west) to improve safety for Huntington residents and drivers with the installation of a permanent layout. This will replace the temporary layout which has been in place since 2016, following safety concerns sparked by increasing traffic on Wairere Dr.

The new permanent layout is the same as the current layout, and will enable the removal of the orange hit sticks which were used to trial different layouts. Provision for eastbound cyclists to move from the road to the shared path on Wairere Dr before the Huntington Dr (west) intersection will also be provided.

Traffic management will be in place from 9am to 3pm at all three locations while this work is done. The Council asks road users asked to take additional care through these areas during construction, and thanks people in advance for their understanding.
