Combining roller shades or other types of blinds with… View moreEver thought about combining blinds and curtains to make your windows even more stunning and energy smart? If done correctly, combining blinds with curtains can bring magic to your windows providing flexibility for styling and design aesthetics. Combining roller shades or other types of blinds with curtains allows more blocking of light and privacy control while also improving heat loss through your windows.
If you want your windows to perform at their best, we’ve put together a few tips on what you should consider.
1. Begin with the blinds
Consider whether you want Rollershades, Venetian Blinds, Roman Blinds, Timber Shutters, or another type of blind. Shades that move up and down at the window are especially convenient, especially if you’re looking for blinds that move out of the way easily. Curtains and draperies are much more flexible to work with, so getting the blinds right is an important first step.
2. Don’t feel limited by your window size
A simple way to make your windows feel larger is to fit your blinds for your window and then extend the size of your curtains beyond your window frame. We can fit your curtains to the ceiling and have them extend past the frame and down to the floor. This creates the illusion of a larger window, especially when the curtains are closed, but also helps you to maximise on heat retention at the window.
3. Mix not match
Contrasting colors can look great. For example, a dark-coloured Rollershade can look excellent with a lighter colour drape. If you have curtains with prints, a blind in a solid shade that matches one of the colors on the curtains can look dramatic or elegant.

Tied to the rising of Matariki, the Pleiades star cluster, in the night sky, the festival marks the start of te Mātahi o te tau, the new year.
Once a casualty of colonisation, Matariki’s comeback has fostered greater use of te reo Māori, and recognition for Māori customary practices.

I am a whaanau (family) representative for the Melville Collective Impact project that was formed in October 2019 with the guidance of local iwi (tribal authority) Waikato-Tainui and haapu (sub-tribes) of our area. To clarify the Melville Area that this project supports is the suburbs in West ward such as: Melville North, Melville South, Bader, Fitzroy, Peacockes, Glenview and Resthills. We are re-branding our name as it does not yet attribute all the suburbs of our Area.
There is alot of changes that you would be noticing going on around our nick of the woods , or even heard about through the grapevine. That's why this project has been formed to allow our community no matter what background to be leaders for our area - to let local government, schools, businesses and health providers what we want to see in our community.
If you would like to have your say on what is happening within the community and our area please complete this short survey (at the end of this post). Or if you would like to become an active member for our community come along to the next meeting being held at Melville Intermediate on Tuesday 4th August, 5:30pm. I have included our first paanui (notice) put together after our second design meeting with some of the members of our community - we still need your say. Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival runs 24 July to 2 August with 79 feature films and seven short film collections from 41 countries screening in the unique At Home – Online digital edition. Browse the programme and choose from documentaries, drama, doco-drama, short films, animation and a special programme for kids, and enjoy special filmmaker introductions and Q&As.
Selected films will also screen in 16 cinemas and theatres in eight cities – Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Gore.
