An interior designer shares the top 5 golden rules for bedroom design

Robert Anderson from Curtain Clean Hamilton

It follows that they should be a place of tranquility, somewhere to calm yourself after a day of sensory overload. Except it’s not always so cut and dried, particularly because many of us also use our bedroom as a refuge and place to be alone, a personal space in which to watch Netflix or even a study for an upcoming exam. So, follow your heart and create a bedroom that brings your dreams alive in the daytime as well as at night.
We would just say, pay attention to the mattress and the bed. Make sure they’re comfortable and, because they will undoubtedly be the focus of the room, choose your headboard and bedding with care. You will also need a degree of functionality about the room, so ensure that the wardrobe space is sufficient for your needs, that the curtains or blinds provide as much darkness as you need to sleep and that your lighting is suitably ambient but still good enough to allow you to read a book without eye strain.

1. Bedheads are essential
Whether you’re designing a child’s room or main bedroom, a feature bedhead is non-negotiable. It not only helps anchor the bed, but also makes the room feel complete. Think round, oblong, wall-to-wall, velvet, rattan, linen, custom-made timber – the options are endless. With lots of companies now making custom bedheads in New Zealand there are options to suit every room and taste. In a child’s room you can even use paint to create a bedhead – paint a shape on the wall behind the bed or paint the lower half of the room a different colour from the upper half.

2. Focus on lighting
Lighting is one of the most important accessories in any home and an easy way to create the wow factor – think of it like jewellery for a room. In bedrooms, pendant lights are ideal if the ceilings are high enough. In the main bedroom a pendant should be positioned above the foot of the bed, in the centre, so it’s out of the way of the room’s open space. Bedside lights can be used to create ambience at night. If you’re renovating or building, consider hanging a pendant or positioning a wall light above each bedside table. The light switch should line up vertically with the lights and sit 700mm from the floor so it’s higher than all bedside tables. Power points should also align with the lights, sitting just above the skirting board.

3. Always consider proportion
For a bedroom to work you need to think about proportion. Balance is created when all aspects of a room are in proportion with one another, so if your bed looks too big or your bedside tables look too small, they probably are. When you’re laying out your room, check the size of the bed – draw it on the wall or floor if you can. If your child’s bedroom is big, don’t push the single bed right into the corner. Leaving even a small amount of space (200mm) between the bed and an adjacent wall will allow you to make the bed more easily, as well as helping the room look in proportion, as your eye can drop behind the bed rather than hitting the wall and running up.

Twice in the past month, I have been overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers in our community
The first occasion was in my local supermarket late one very hot afternoon. I was extremely tired and just wanted to get the shopping over abd done with, so I could get home and put my feet up
At the checkout, my cash flow card declined. I then realised I had the dates mixed up and the money was due into my account the following day .
Tiredly, I explained to the checkout operator that because I had left ny phone at home, I would need to shoot home and move a little money into that account, then return for my small bundle of groceries.
As I walked away, she called out "It's OK, it's sorted" .
A complete stranger had used his card to pay my account He even asked me if I had bought everything that I needed at that time. I was so overcome and grateful It was not a lot of money by some standards but his kindness and caring concern for my welfare was humbling.
This afternoon, in a city supermarket, I had overpurchased for the amount of money in my account at that time - tiredness again was a factor and a health issue, causing pain in my feet and ankles.
I managed to pull out quite a few of the dearer items and had almost reduced the bill down very close to what was required.
At this point, a lady gave the checkout operator a $20 note to settle the bill "Oh no", I protested " I will just take a few more items out"
She would not hear of it. Once again, I was thunderstruck by kindness from a stranger.
I am an ex JAFA. Whatever is in the water here, it is beautiful.

Hi Booklovers!

We have a new venue – Maramarua on SH 2. This time of the year we would usually be in Waikino but their hall is not available because of renovations so I've managed to find a new venue at Maramarua. We opened yesterday, Saturday 5th and will be here until Sunday 13th.

The hall at Maramarua is on a little hill in front of the fire station. It is on the south side of SH2. If you are coming up SH27, or from Paeroa or Tauranga, as you pass the general store you can see it in the distance on top of the hill so slow down to catch the entrance.

I can't put my little truck (Little Toot) at the entrance as this will hinder fire station personnel arriving on a callout so it will be parked across the road – the best we can do.

Our usual opening hours are 9am – 6pm.

The hall hire was only agreed last weekend, too late to advertise in the local papers, but it will be in this week so that should bring a few more people out. The weather has been so hot this week, regularly 30 degrees, so packing and moving into the hall (using the large and small trucks) has been extremely tiring. However we are now in and all set up so please come and check out our books.

There are several cafes here at Maramarua, including the pub which serves meals. We will probably try out the pub for dinner tonight. It's too hot to cook after a long day looking after books – well that's my excuse if I needed one!!

My friend Jennifer is up here with me for this event and maybe for Eureka next month.

You may notice changes in the way some books are priced. I have been buying in some books for those very popular authors who have their own boxes. Unfortunately this means there are more yellow stickers in these boxes than previously.

My friend Rod's garden art should arrive later today. He has his usual wind wands but has introduced a new range of crystal wands which reflect the sun and will look lovely in the garden.

Thanks to all of you who are doing the Covid-19 things endeavouring to keep us all safe. We have the usual Covid sign in forms and the user app pictures on a table inside the hall.

In my next newsletter I will provide the Eureka book fair dates for 2022 for you to diarise.

Best wishes
Trudi
