Kia ora, last week we put out a message on our Facebook page because our Emergency Department at Waikato was in overload and Waikato Hospital was full. You may have come across this media with the following headlines: Don’t come unless it’s an emergency, Waikato Hospital ED staff stay.

We would like to thank those that shared our important message via social media with friends and whānau because with your support, we reached over 100,000 people. We’ve been so busy we did forget to use Neighbourly as a media channel, but will do so in the future.

The situation is more manageable now thanks to your support and the relentless work by our staff, but we are still extremely busy.

It is even more important we keep spreading this message because no matter what our hospital capacity is, the same message stands at all times: Unless you have a real emergency, please check first with your GP or phone Healthline 0800 611 116 before coming to Waikato Hospital’s Emergency Department.

And it's really important that you continue to take good care of yourselves from nutrition to things like washing your hands often, keeping up your fluids and keeping active. There are lots of programmes available in the Waikato to support all ages including the Green Prescription by Sport Waikato that helps educate women around food and exercise, and if you're looking to quit smoking try ONCE AND FOR ALL (www.onceandforall.co.nz).

And please make sure you see your GP regularly to avoid becoming too unwell.

Now is also a good time to sign up to SmartHealth, a free online healthcare service using your smart phone, tablet device or computer. You can use SmartHealth to talk to a free out of hour’s doctor by video, voice or text chat. Visit www.smarthealth.org.nz... for more information and to sign up.

Also read some of the positive patient experience stories from people around the Waikato.

Take care of yourselves Waikato.

Ngā mihi from Waikato DHB

Wanting something for the kids to do over the school holidays? Why not sign up for our libraries reading programme?

The programme, called ‘Mission Possible: K9 Recovery’, is aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years although older or younger children can sign up. It runs from 18 September to 28 October.

Children have to help Korakora, our library kiwi, find the missing library dog somewhere in New Zealand. For every book they read, they’ll be given clues to the dog’s whereabouts which they will have to decipher. There’s also a ‘detective skills’ workshop, a special guest speaker that will talk to the kids about what to do when they’re lost, a ‘dog hunt’ where kids find a picture of the dog in the library to go in the draw for prizes, and a finale party.

There are 190 places available at our six libraries: Raglan, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Meremere and Tuakau. Last year the programme was a huge hit so we encourage people to sign up early to avoid missing out, says Customer Delivery Manager Angela Parquist. Children do not need to be library members to register for the programme.

To register, please contact your local library. Please note that registrations close on 6 October.

Speed limits are under review and you're invited to share your views on proposed amendments to our Speed Limits Bylaw.

Rural roads in the northern area of the district will be addressed first as Council follows recommendations in the New Zealand Transport Agency’s Speed Management Guide.

Roads addressed in this round of proposed amendments, which are all speed limit reductions, are in the Awaroa ki Tuakau, Onewhero and Whangamarino Wards.

There are also a couple of roads that have been added in this round of consultation – Horotiu Bridge Rd (to improve safety at a school) and Rotokauri Rd ( to align with Hamilton City Council speed limit).

Because of the sheer volume of roads assigned for speed limit amendments, roads in the Huntly, Hukanui-Waerenga and Ngaruawahia Wards will be addressed next year, followed by the Tamahere, Raglan, Eureka and Newcastle Wards the following year.

The list of roads earmarked for speed limit changes is at www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz...

Assessment criteria used to determine roads that fall into the high risk category include: alignment; carriageway width; roadside hazards; land use; traffic volume; crash history and the suitability of the existing speed limit.

Initial feedback was sought from the residents who live on those roads with a potential speed limit change that had been identified from the Speed Management Guide maps.

From today, anyone can make a submission about the proposed speed limit amendments on the list of roads at www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz...

Copies of the submission documents are also available at Council offices and libraries.

Submissions close on 13 October 2017. Should submitters wish to be heard, the hearing date for submissions is 27 November 2017.
