From local democracy reporter Lois Williams:

West Coast health workers are about to head for the hills to offer Covid-19 vaccinations to rural people who may have missed out.

DHB general manager Phil Wheble told the board on Friday that 43 per cent of eligible West Coast residents were now fully vaccinated and 64 per cent have had their first shots. That compared to the national figure of 67 per cent who had received their first dose.

Vaccinations slowed to 1600 a week during the recent lockdown because of social distancing rules, Wheble said.

The campaign is about to crank up again with drive-through clinics arranged for Westport, Hokitika and Greymouth in October for everyone aged 12 and older.

The West Coast drive-through free vaccination clinics for people 12 and over will run from 10am to 4pm as follows:
- Westport (Saturday and Sunday, October 2-3), Pulse Energy Recreation Centre, corner of Domett and Pakington streets.
- Hokitika (Saturday and Sunday, October 9-10), Westland Milk Products staff car park, corner of Stafford and Livingstone streets.
- Greymouth (Friday, October 15 and Sunday, October 17), Greymouth Aerodrome.

Bookings can be made online at www.BookMyVaccine.nz... or by calling the National Booking team on 0800 28 29 26 (8am to 8pm, seven days).

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have given a secret donation to Westport’s flood relief fund.

Buller mayor Jamie Cleine said the royal couple made the donation to Buller’s Mayoral Relief Fund to help residents affected by the flood that inundated the West Coast town in July.

He said at the request of His Royal Highness the amount would not be disclosed.

About 500 homes were damaged by the flood, resulting in provisional insurance costs of about $85 million.

The Mayoral Relief Fund has received more than $500,000 in government funding and donations. It has paid out about $300,000 so far, with the rest earmarked for uninsured people.

Cleine said some residents had lost everything and would be unable to return home for a long time.

“It is very thoughtful of them to contribute to the Mayoral Relief Fund. I have thanked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall for their generosity on behalf of our community.”

The heir to the throne visited Westport in November 2015 and charmed the crowds during a walk along the main street.

He also visited the now-closed West Coast Brewery to sample beer and whitebait patties, which he described as a perfect combination.

At 2.08m tall, Max Gawn from Greymouth wouldn’t look out of place in a black jersey, linking arms with Brodie Retallick or Sam Whitelock.

Instead the 29-year-old giant will command attention at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Saturday night – three weeks after the All Blacks beat the Wallabies there – as captain of Melbourne Demons in the Australian Football League grand final against Western Bulldogs.

Gawn’s parents Rob and Sandra are proud West Coasters and run a café in country Victoria, but due to Covid-19 restrictions must watch the grand final from their lounge room. The family lived in Greymouth for several years soon after young Max was born, before they shifted back across the Tasman and he made a key decision on a future career.
