Working with Hokitika’s Regent Theatre, Hokitika's Green Team has arranged for the film “The Worm is Turning – Ecological Farming, the Real Revolution” to be screened on Wednesday 31st May, preceded by a seed swap and followed up with a chat and a cuppa.

The documentary shows where the current corporate model of chemical, monoculture style farming comes from, and how it was spread around the world, using India as the prime example.
The film shows amazing examples of farmers from India, to USA to Australia, demonstrating a better method of farming, both for human health and for a better environment, one that is sustainable and restorative. Study after study has shown that small, ecological farms are in fact more productive and efficient with resources, and are the best model going forward.

Please come and join us to watch the film and discuss the issues and take the opportunity to put questions and ideas to the team for future Green Columns.

As we head in to winter, check out these 5 top tips for cutting down your power bill:

1. If you’re not using it, switch it off: If you’re not using an appliance, such as a heated towel, dryer, or TV, switch it off at the wall so it doesn’t use power on standby.

2. Change your cooking habits: Eat fresh veges instead of cooking. Using the oven for an hour a night can add $20 to your monthly power bill.

3. Use curtains to trap heat in: Let the sun heat your home during the day then close your curtains to stop the warmth escaping in the evening.

4. If you’re away, turn the hot water cylinder off: You can save up to $36 on your power bill if you switch your hot water cylinder off while away on weekends.

5. Make the most out of your FREE Hour of Power: Utilise power deals like Electric Kiwi’s free Hour of Power, which gives you one off peak hour of free power a day. Use this hour to heat your home, turn on the dishwasher, or run the washing machine and dryer.

Take on Red Cross Journey and challenge yourself to walk in the shoes of a volunteer responding to a disaster or a former refugee family seeking safety. Follow their journey, hear their stories and make a difference for people in your community and around the world.

How does it work?

Red Cross Journey is all about walking in someone else’s shoes. Choose a journey to follow, clock 10,000 steps each day between 8 May and 8 June and get people to sponsor you.

Along the way, you’ll receive updates marking your milestones and sharing more about your chosen journey.
By taking part and fundraising, you’ll be helping Red Cross do good things across New Zealand and around the world.

Which journey will you take?

Choose to walk Disaster Welfare and Support Team volunteer Kath’s journey and cover 240km during the month – that’s about 10,000 steps a day – or get a team together and follow the Tamim family's route to a safer life, covering 1,000km.

Registrations are now open. Sign up and make every step count!
