Did you know, 1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives? When they do, let’s make sure they never have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to use our voice to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Perhaps consider sharing a cuppa with someone you know who could use the support or challenge your family and friends to unplug from social media for the entire month to improve their well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for FREE support from a trained counsellor.

Don’t forget, this month also coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) followed by Mental Health Awareness Week (23 - 29 September) and Mental Health Awareness Day on October 10th.

However you choose to take part, feel free to tag us in your posts + use the following hashtag so we can see how you’re cultivating better mental health for yourself or in your community this month:

Westland not Wasteland spokesman Mark Mellsop-Melssen said the group's aim was to stop the transport of waste to Westland for incineration.

An engineers report has found there are no practical solutions to reopen the Fox Glacier access road after a major landslide blocked it in February.

While the road won't be reopened, the government has created a $3.9 million plan to sustain South Westland's tourism.

The money will go towards:
o Redesigning the Fox Glacier/Te Moeka o Tuawe experience and valley walks and creating a car park and cycle/walkway for access to the south side of the valley and glacier views, and building trails to connect existing facilities.
o Collaborating with Ngāi Tahu and Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio to develop a day walk to Lake Gault, which has reflection views of the mountains and forests and will incorporate rowi kiwi and lowland forest stories. This walk extends the walking options at Lake Matheson.
o Developing and promoting the easy access Peak Viewpoint which offers stunning views of the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana.
o Re-opening the coastal walkway to Galway Beach which provides a mix of alpine views, coastal forests, wetlands and wildlife.
o Extending the cycle/walking trail on Cook Flat Rd from Fox Glacier township to Lake Matheson.
o Re-configuring car parking at Lake Matheson to provide for additional users displaced from the glacier valley.
o Refreshing road signage and visitor information.
