Safety counts – assessing safety features when buying a car

Enterprise Motor Group Gisborne

If you’re in the process of buying a car you’re probably busy considering all the features and fittings that you’d like to invest in. Are you keen on a bigger engine or fatter tyres? Or perhaps you’re prioritising interior space so you can fit in the kids, the dog, and the weekly shop.

Everyone approaches car buying with their own unique set of priorities. If you haven’t already, it’s worth adding safety to your list. Choosing the safest car you can afford is an investment in your own personal wellbeing and that of your passengers. And because it’s a key part of how insurance companies calculate their rates, it could also save you money.

Can any one/ Lead help me?

I have a lady in my neighbourhood who is keen to track down a Helen Matherson (maiden name) who once lived in the Wanaka region.

The lady from my neighbourhood is arranging a reunion of those who worked at the Pompolona Lodge on the Milford Track, in the Fiordland National Park back in the 1980s.

The Pompolona Lodge Staff Reunion is taking place in January 2018 and I believe most people have been located, except this one person - so the search is on for Helen Matherson!

Would Leads consider posting up a message on their noticeboards in the hope that Helen, a family member or someone who knows the Matherson family may see it and make contact?

Thanks.

As with any change of seasons, it’s important to stop and take stock of the impact that the recent weather may have had on your car. With the seasonal change from Winter to Spring to Summer, you may find your vehicle in need of some much needed maintenance. Here’s a helpful checklist that you can use to keep your car performing at the top of its game.

1. Check your fluids.
The season change is a great time to go through your car from front to back and check that your fluids are topped up and ready to take on the warmer weather. You should check the power steering; brake; transmission; windscreen washer fluid; coolant; and water levels. Bear in mind that your power steering, brake and coolant fluids work in a closed system. If you find their levels are low you should investigate further: it could indicate a slow leak.

2. Change your oil and oil filter.
Keeping clean oil running through your engine is one of the best ways of preserving it and keeping it functioning without trouble. A season change is a great time to change out your oil and replace your filter.

3. Check your spark plugs.
Take time to check that your spark plugs are in full working order. Worn out spark plugs can have a big impact on your fuel efficiency so they should be regularly checked.

We wish everyone a safe Halloween but we need to remember that not everyone wants to be part of Halloween celebrations.

For some older people Halloween can be a frightening and scary time so here are some helpful tips so everyone can enjoy themselves and come away with fond memories:

- Make it a family affair and go trick or treating with your kids or a group from your neighbourhood.
- Call your neighbours in advance to make sure it’s okay to call in to trick-or-treat
- If you don’t want trick-or-treaters calling print or make a sign for your letterbox or window saying no thanks. (New Zealand Police have had downloadable signs)
- If you are a trick-or-treater, respect the people who have a sign asking for you to stay away
- Keep your lights on and guests outside
- Keep your eye out for your older family members, friends and neighbours this Halloween and make sure we all get to enjoy the celebration.

Remember you can help make this a great celebration for your family and community and a great opportunity to connect with your older neighbours.

If you want to go one step further Age Concern New Zealand would like to encourage all Kiwis to sign up to their Dignity Champion Campaign to show a commitment to breaking down ageism and stereotypes and encouraging dignity and respect for older people.

Become an Age Concern Dignity Champion www.ageconcern.org.nz... this Halloween and involve and celebrate the older people in your lives.
