For our fourth Artist a Day post, we’re excited to share with you the work of Val Jones. Val is a Foxton Beach-based artist working primarily in acrylic paints. In her works, Val seeks to capture the beauty of the natural world - birds, insects, landscapes, flowers and seascapes – all rendered in bold, bright colour. Val says she enjoys photographing her subjects prior to painting them, as the painting process enables her to interpret the beauty of the scene into her own, unique style.
Val will be exhibiting five artworks at Manawatū Art Expo 2022. Be sure to visit between 9am and 4.30pm from July 15 and 17 for your chance to see these vibrant artworks in person! In the interim, you can learn more about Val’s art by perusing her Instagram feed @val.jones.art.

Natalia describes herself as an impressionist painter, but one whose work is also imbued with a style that is just her own. As an artist who admires nature’s ability to care for its inhabitants, Natalia says she draws inspiration from the natural world, but her goal is not to achieve realism or a naturalistic finish. Instead, she explains that she strives to “paint [her] emotions into each subject” so that her paintings provide a form of visual healing for the viewer.
You can learn more about Natalia by visiting her website: www.nataliavidyakina.com... and If you'd like to see more of Natalia’s work, join us at Manawatū Art Expo - Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre - 15-17 July.

In our second Artist A Day post, we introduce you to Gill Allen. Working from her studio in the Horowhenua, Gill’s creative practice focuses on semi-abstracted landscapes and still life compositions. Her paintings are a mix of landscapes and flowers, drawn and painted in both full colour as well as black and white.
Gill considers soft pastel her main medium but says she also loves “dark line, inks”. She explains that her mark-making and drawing style emulate the movement and life found in nature and the natural landscape that surrounds her. This is a style she first began developing at art school - where she fell in love with the linear work of Vincent Van Gogh - but one she has developed and refined throughput her career.
Gill holds a BFA from Otago Art School, as well as a City and Guilds qualification in Further Education Adult Education. As well as seeing Gill’s work at this year’s Manawatū Art Expo, you can explore her art at gillallen.co.nz or follow her on Facebook @gillallenNZArtist.

With more than 90 artists involved, we won't get through everyone. Instead, these Artist a Day Posts will give you a little preview of the brilliant artwork set to go on show when Manawatū Art Expo goes on show from 15-17 July.
Our first Artist A Day for 2022 is Palmerston North-based painter, Katharine Collin.Katharine is an artist who loves detail. Drawing inspiration from her European travels, Katharine finds satisfaction in painting scenes with bright red bricks, crowded cobblestone streets and ivy-covered buildings. As she paints each stone, each leaf or brick, she is transported back to those places and the precious memories she made there. And so, in her works the viewer too is transported to faraway locations, sharing the moment that inspired each painting.
In discussing her works, Katharine explains that she hasn't always been a painter. In fact, she spent a lifetime admiring the watercolours produced by her sister, Rosemary Powell. It was only 10 years ago, during a visit to her sister in the UK, that Katharine finally decided to dabble - first with pencil sketches, then with ink and watercolour pencils. Nowadays, she works primarily with acryics, explaining that ""after seeing a demonstration at the Art Expo by the amazing Vonnie Sterritt some years ago, I signed up for her classes. Vonnie introduced me to acrylics and I now enjoy working with them [because] they're so versatile.""
Katharine describes her art as a journey, one where she is is still evolving, still learning, but loving every moment.
If you'd like to see more of Katharine's work, join us at Manawatū Art Expo - Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre - 15-17 July. It's only $5 to enter, and under 14s can come along for free!
