The Dunedin City Council is investigating slowing traffic along the city's major retail thoroughfare to just 10kmh. The change would affect George St and to the south of the Octagon — an area already subject to a 30kmh limit.

The proposal has been driven by the Government's plan to move the country into Alert Level 2 on Thursday, with council staff considering ways to encourage people to return to Dunedin's CBD, albeit at a safe physical distance.

A grieving family thought an urn containing the ashes of a cherished relative had been lost forever, but on the eve of the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown they made a surprising discovery.

Mosgiel's Mira Meek went public with her story after believing her late brother's ashes had been accidentally donated to a charity shop.

But the night before the nationwide lockdown began, she spotted an icecream container in her drawer and inside was the small urn containing her brother Todd's ashes.

Meridian Mall required strengthening after it was found to have a seismic performance of less than 34 per cent of the New Building Standard.

The 23-year-old mall is located on George St — Dunedin's major shopping thoroughfare — and it reopened for business under Alert Level 2 on Thursday.

However, two of its larger tenants, Kmart and the department store H & J Smith will not reopen for several weeks.
