Work to clear several city blocks to make way for Dunedin's new hospital has continued in recent months, but a major stumbling block has just been removed.
The Ministry of Health applied to demolish several old Cadbury factory buildings, including protected facades on Cumberland St.
Resource consent was required and on Thursday morning, the Dunedin City Council announced it had approved the application.
The proposal offers an insight into how large the project is, with the demolition of the older Cadbury factory expected to take 11 months from March 2021.

A following motorist, a 55-year-old man, failed to see the stopped vehicle – and presumably the ducks – and rear-ended the woman's vehicle.
Not to be outdone, a third vehicle – driven by another 55-year-old man who was busy looking at a crashed car from earlier that morning – rear-ended the second car.
The motorists were unhurt in the pile-up but the status of the ducks, and their reason for crossing the road, remain unclear.
