Dunedin mayor Aaron Hawkins says Foulden Maar is rich in biodiversity, essential for conservation and will allow scientists to better understand the history of life, southern hemisphere biogeography and climate change.

Sadly a Dunedin man died from Legionnaires' disease last month - less than a week after handling potting mix. The man is believed to have been infected with the illness while adding compost to a glasshouse.
Medical officer of health Dr Anura Jayasinghe says people should watch out for signs of legionellosis as early treatment is usually effective. Early symptoms can appear two to 10 days after exposure and are similar to the flu.
ANYONE HANDLING POTTING MIX, SOILS OR COMPOST SHOULD:
- Wear a good quality, double strap mask that fits well and covers the nose and mouth.
- Wear gloves to protect against skin infections and prevent spreading the legionella bug (such as to your mouth).
- Open bags in a well ventilated space, away from the face.
- Wash hands when finished.

Kahutara Primary School in Featherston is switching to LEDs. All LEDs are Gen Less bulbs as they use less energy, which ultimately helps halt climate change. If we all got on board and switched now it would make a huge difference

For the month of November, we want to raise awareness and work together to end all forms of violence including family harm, elder and child abuse, sexual assault, gang violence, and more. These victimisations affect us all and can have lasting effects that spill into our everyday lives including at work and school.
To do your part this month, perhaps consider supporting a women’s refuge or work with Police in your area to host an info night on how to identify elder or child abuse in your community. This month’s campaign also coincides with White Ribbon Day on 25 November which is an internationally celebrated day that aims to prevent violence towards women.
