The simple gesture of sending a Christmas card could help tackle "the single biggest issue facing older people today".

It all started when Auckland woman Hannah Rodgers and her son, Jayden, committed to 100 days of kindness in the lead-up to Christmas last year.

"On day 65, Jayden suggested we write a card for someone who might feel lonely at Christmas," Rodgers says.

Now Rodgers and her son want the campaign, Sending Love, to help 100,000 Kiwis of all ages as it returns for its second year.

A small band of residents who spent more than $100,000 fighting plans for a new quarry on the outskirts of Christchurch are celebrating after a court upheld a decision to stop it going ahead.

The High Court backed an earlier decision by the Environment Court to deny Harewood Gravels permission to develop a 28-hectare site in Yaldhurst near Christchurch Airport.

Jubilant residents say they are "relieved and grateful" for the decision, and hope it will bring their three-and-a-half year battle against the quarry to a close.

But Harewood Gravels director Murray Francis says the decision is "by no means the end of the line for us".
