Our April issue should be with our subscribers now and available in supermarkets and service stations (having been distributed prior to the lockdown restrictions). Whether or not it's on the stands yet is a bit patchy ... but then the incredibly brave and hard-working supermarket staff have quite a bit on their plate right now so I understand if there is a delay! Please, please, please everyone ... don't go out to buy it! Normally of course we love you buying NZ Gardener but right now it's far more important that you stay home and stay safe. (You can buy a copy with your online shopping though! That's safe and I think we are all in the market for something uplifting to read right now).
In this issue we offered to send out sweet pea seeds to any reader who sent us a SSAE. Just to reassure you, we will still send out sweet pea seeds to any reader who is keen to participate. We are just not quite sure when! Ignore the dates in the magazine of when you needed to send the envelope in by - that has been indefinitely extended. But we cannot wait to send you the seed and for those flowers to bloom as by then we will be well through this or even have it behind us. And keep letting us know what you are sowing and growing, send in pictures of your harvest, your flowers or what you are sharing.
We always love hearing from NZ Gardener readers but now when we are all staying apart that connection means more than you can imagine. Stay home, stay safe and stay in touch everyone. It’s important that we all try and shop safely as we unite against COVID-19.
Here’s a few things we should all now do, that will help slow the spread of the virus:
• send one person from your household to do the whole shop
• be aware that stores will limit numbers to help you keep 2 metres away from others
• be kind to essential workers, and others you’re sharing the shop with
• come with a list so you can get in and out as quickly as possible
• only touch what you want to buy
• if you like, take a soapy towel in a small container to wipe down trolley or basket handles etc
• keep 2 metres away from others, including staff. They need to keep safe too!
• use payWave if you can, not cash
• bag groceries away from others if you can
• take out produce when you get home, and wash first in soapy water to protect against the virus, then rinse to remove any soap residue wipe down packaged goods with a soapy clean towel, then dry
• wash your hands before and after you shop.
Can I bring people in my household with me to buy essential supplies?
You should dedicate one person per household to be the shopper. This is the safest way to get essential supplies, as it reduces the number of people who are out, and helps stop the virus from spreading.
Leaving online shopping to those who need it most
• If you are healthy, or aged under 70, you should go to the supermarket to do your shopping. This leaves online delivery slots free for those that need them most.
• If you’re a parent on your own with children or over 70, move to online shopping if available. This is important for the safety of your children and others – especially essential service providers.
• If that’s not possible, reach out to nearby friends, family or neighbours who can assist you with the shopping and get it to your doorstep. Your local community may also be able to assist, or you can contact your local store – some are putting special systems in place to help.

I hope your all well, prepared ,stocked up and staying informed.
Our immediate thoughts go out to all those who are currently and or will be affected in some way with this nasty virus rapidly spreading so quickly.
With the country at Level Four - Eliminate lock down I guess some of us might be Covid fatigued .
Our family haven't reached this point yet I don't think we will as we are carrying out our plan which includes self isolating within our bubble like the majority of others are doing and keeping active with the kids.
Today we decided to make a Scare Crow to put up out on the front lawn of our house to bring a smile to those driving or walking past.
The response has been instant.
Cameras have been flashing with plenty of smiles from people waving .
We've had a laugh watching peoples reactions.
I recommend others to have a go imagine a street filled with Scare Crows -something the kids enjoyed making.

Essential Services Update
The COVID-19 Alert Level will become Level 4 on Wednesday 25 March at 11:59pm. This means that all businesses will be closed except for essential services and lifeline utilities.
For our industry, essential services means work related to critical infrastructure, or services immediately needed to maintain human health and safety at home/work.
Under this definition we may continue to perform all plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work that is associated with ensuring that the other essential services and critical infrastructure can keep operating.
A description of what is an essential service can be found on the Covid-19 website at this link: covid19.govt.nz...
For example, we can continue to provide our plumbing services to businesses associated with fast-moving consumer goods, food production or key public services. You can also carry out work associated with health services or emergency services.
We cannot, however, continue to provide services to businesses that do not appear on that list.
Under the definition we may also continue to provide plumbing services if they are immediately needed to maintain human health and safety at home/work.
Under this definition the services must:
1. Be needed to maintain human health and safety at home/work; and
2. This need must be immediate.
Examples of the type of work that would come under this definition include:
• The repair/replacement of hot water cylinders that have failed, as the hot water will be required for sanitation purposes.
• The unblocking and repair/replacement of sanitary waste pipes where there is an immediate threat to human health and safety.
• The repair/replacement of water pipes where there is an immediate threat to human health and safety.
• The repair/replacement of gas piping, fittings and appliances where there is an immediate threat to human health and safety.
Examples of things that would not be included in that definition are:
• The repair of minor leaks.
• The replacement of tap washers.
• Routine servicing.
• The replacement of sanitary fixtures that are working.
The emphasis is on essential repairs, not those that can wait for another day and pose no immediate threat to health and safety.
The lockdown is designed to increase our nation’s ability to fight and stamp out the COVID-19 virus. It is important that all of us play our part in respecting the lockdown if the disease is to be defeated.

We’re heading into winter, and with households self-isolating together, there’ll be more cooking at home, and more use of open fires, heaters, and dryers - all things which can increase fire risk.
New Zealanders can be confident that Fire and Emergency is well-prepared and ready to respond to emergencies as usual during the nationwide self- isolation period.
Please call 111 if you have a fire, we will ask you whether anyone at the address is self-isolating or has a confirmed case of COVID-19. Where this is the case, we already have necessary measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety including protective clothing, gloves, masks, safety glasses and mask.
