Hey neighbours,

Sightings of several seal species roaming around the Canterbury coastline has prompted a safety reminder from the Department of Conservation.

Leopard seals, like the one pictured at Waimari Beach over the weekend, should never be approached, DOC says. They are aggressive and agile, and can inflict severe injuries to anyone that ventures too close.

They are impressive to look at, but a 20m distance should be kept and dogs kept on a leash as leopard seals can, and will, defend themselves vigorously.

If you see a leopard seal, take some photos or a short video and contact Leopard Seals NZ on 0800 536 7273.

Do you support self-monitoring at rest homes?

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

Every morning, Rhonda Brennan records her health vitals on a tablet at her retirement village unit.

The software is being tested to see if it can assist in a pandemic situation as it does not require a nurse to be present.

Would you support a move to self-monitoring health vitals?

Christchurch Hospital patients and visitors have welcomed upgrades to a park-and-ride site once described as a “potholed mess”.

The car park, which has 200 spaces for patients and visitors and up to 150 for staff, is sealed, lit and offers covered shelters for those waiting for a shuttle to Christchurch Hospital.

Staveley housewife Judy Vaughan, 63, used the shuttle to get to her hospital appointment on Monday.

She said the Deans Ave site was easy to find and the shuttle was a "good service", which she would recommend to friends.

What are your thoughts on the new service?

Auckland will remain in lockdown until Sunday, a four-day extension of the lockdown which was meant to lift on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there were promising signs that the Government was getting on top of the virus, but a short extension was recommended by director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield.

On Sunday night Auckland would move down to level 2. The rest of the country would stay at level 2.

Ardern said the rest of the country needed to stay at an elevated alert level to mitigate the risk of cases leaving Auckland when interregional travel resumed. Click here to read more.
