Kia kaha Canterbury! Have you got any messages of support?

February 22 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquakes.

With uncertainties surrounding commemorations due to recent Covid-19 restrictions, the Christchurch City Council will live stream the event so that people worldwide will have to opportunity to pay their respects.

The council has worked closely with the Quakes Families Trust to create a memorial service that will acknowledge and commemorate those that lost their lives and all that have endured hardship due to the disaster.

“We want people, no matter where they are in the world, to feel part of the commemorations so we will be live-streaming both the national memorial service on 22 February and the free concert – Ōtautahi Together – on 28 February,” says Christchurch City Council Civic and International Relations Manager Matt Nichols.

185 Cantabrians lost their lives when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at a depth of 5km near south-east Christchurch in 2011.

Share your messages of support below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the Northern Outlook.

Hi all
I hold a freestyle dancing session on Thursdays at the Phillipstown Community Hub (Room 10) 3-4pm. Only fee is non-perishable food item for the community pantry.
Playlist is mixed over the past 3 decades (omg it's only yesterday!) and if you really hate a song, we can easily change it (not a lot of people so it's manageable).
Chairs available to rest on or 'wave your arms - chair dance). Go at your own pace, no structure, no lesson - just boogie. Love to see you there one day.

Wonderful start to the weekend with Brian Davis welcoming all of our
guests to the Grand Opening of the St Martins Community Menzshed. Dugald Wilson cut the (4x2) ribbon, and an extended tour of the facilities and morning tea followed.
This Menzshed, for all of South Christchurch, is located at 43 St Martins Road behind the church (but independent of the church!). You can bring your own project or work on a group community project Wednesday and Saturday mornings. (You have to participate in health and safety briefings and training to use some of the machinery) There will be experienced guys on hand to give advice, and a warm welcome.
Menzshed is about learning skills, making new friendships, and doing projects for self and community.

This year's event runs from March 20 - 30th with the theme being 'The Great Plant Swap' as an easy way for neighbourhoods to grow stronger together.

Here's some ideas for ways you could get involved:

• swap seeds with a neighbour
• gift a plant you've grown to a neighbour
• take some flowers to a neighbour
• organise a produce swap
• share garden tips or recipes for food in season
• create community gardens or berm pollinator pathways
• host an inclusive garden-themed working bee
• a friendly neighbourhood BBQ with homegrown ingredients

The options are endless! At the end of the day, our shared aim is to help bring people together by encouraging intentional connection with our neighbours. Whether that be organising a street party, sharing a cuppa, or simply saying ‘Kia Ora!” to those who live around you, every action helps to create a safer and more connected New Zealand.
