Hi Neighbours,

As you drive around our beautiful country this summer, you'll see honesty stalls, selling everything from fruit and vegetables to pine cones, dotted along our highways.

Honesty stalls in rural NZ may be the "Kiwi way", but thieves are making it difficult to survive.

One grower-family was targeted with a spate of $100 per day thefts.

But out-of-pocket growers have pledged to continue; keeping the "Kiwi tradition" alive, in spite of thieves.

New Year's Eve festivals dotted down the length of the country are drawing thousands of party-goers with music, dancing and drinking, but options for those hoping to enjoy celebrating in Canterbury appear pretty slim.

Organised events for those in the Garden City looking to ring in the new year are mostly confined to pubs, bars and restaurants.

But there is the annual family-friendly celebrations in North Hagley Park. The night will kick off with family entertainment from 6pm, including a performance from comedian Mullet Man, free activities, fairies, and a kids countdown at 8pm. Headline act The Jordan Luck Band will take the stage before a midnight fireworks display.

What have you got planned this New Year's Eve?

Is it a vespula wasp (German or common) or a paper wasp? Find out the difference here.

Once you know which type of wasp to target, the next step is to use the correct control method.

- For paper wasps, there are commercially available sprays at hardware stores around the country. The important things to note are not to get too close (these sprays can go up to four metres), and to do it at dusk once the wasps have returned to their nests. If you are unsure where the nests are, you can usually follow the wasp to it, as they don't travel too far away.

- Vespex is a protein-based bait which is suitable for use on the vespula wasp species. This is usually done at landscape scale as a small tub of bait can cover a large area. You don't need to find the nests as the wasps carry the bait home with them. Vespex is not at all attractive to bees. If there is a problem in your area you can learn all about the use of vespex here. You will need to be an approved user - a short 10-minute video course is all that is required. Vespex is not suitable for paper wasps as they prefer live bait. You can also contribute to our fight against wasps here: givealittle.co.nz...

Parallel walking together would be a great starting point. Would be delighted to hear from you. Happy if your dog is in the same boat, as it be good training for both. Medium to large dogs preferably.
Thanks
Lou

Treasury Paper 14-10

2.3 Changing policy expectations
While useful, models do not capture all the effects policymakers expect from immigration.

When New Zealand moved to increase the numbers and skills of immigrants in the 1980s and 1990s, policymakers appear to have considered that these changes had the potential to have major beneficial impacts on the New Zealand economy, reinforcing the gains from the other liberalising and deregulating economic reforms undertaken during that period.

At that time, it was considered that skills-focused inward migration could: improve growth by bringing in better quality human capital and addressing skills shortages; improve international connections and boost trade; help mitigate the effects of population ageing; and have beneficial effects on fiscal balance. As well as “replacing” departing
New Zealanders and providing particular help with staffing public services (for example, medical professionals), it was believed that migration flows could be managed so as to avoid possible detrimental effects (such as congestion or poorer economic prospects) for existing New Zealanders.

Since then, New Zealand has had substantial gross and net immigration, which has been relatively skill-focused by international standards. However, New Zealand’s economic performance has not been transformed. Growth in GDP per capita has been relatively lacklustre, with no progress in closing income gaps with the rest of the advanced world, and productivity performance has been poor. It may be that initial expectations about the potential positive net benefits of immigration were too high.

Based on a large body of new research evidence and practical experience, the consensus among policymakers now is that other factors are more important for per capita growth and productivity than migration and population growth. CGE modelling exercises for
Australia and New Zealand have been influential in reshaping expectations.
