New Zealand is being hit by a fifth wave of COVID-19 infections driven by people's immunity to the virus waning, epidemiologist Michael Baker says.

He urged New Zealanders to stay home if sick, despite self-isolation requirements no longer being in place.

With more than 100 crashes at a busy Christchurch hub over the last 10 years, a raft of safety improvements have been planned for the area.

Church Corner in Upper Riccarton is home to schools, bus stops, the Bush Inn Centre, a supermarket and Christchurch’s so-called ‘China Town Market’ - all located where main roads intersect.

Christchurch City Council released its report with artist’s impressions (see below) of plans to make the area safer for commuters and pedestrians.

The proposals - which are open for public consultation, include vehicle access from Main South Rd onto Riccarton Rd being removed entirely as the road becomes one westbound lane.
