Fed up and frustrated Christchurch residents have pleaded with the city council to get rid of a smelly compost plant they say is “slowly killing” them.

Bromley residents have been complaining to the Christchurch City Council about the “vile and putrid” smells and dust coming the plant, owned by the council and run by Living Earth, for 11 years.

Anger spilled out into the council chamber on Wednesday when residents called on the council to move the plant to a rural area away from homes. Four residents spoke at the council meeting and another five submitted written statements.

The residents have little faith that a proposed $17.5 million upgrade of the plant will make any difference to the odour.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

Hi neighbours,

A sighting of two endangered newborn dolphins has prompted renewed calls for fishing restrictions around Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula.

Do you think fishing restrictions should be put in place?

Have you been out to see the dolphins at Banks Peninsula before?

The Press gets delivered in them daily, so they are clean inside and I collect a good twenty-five a month and they are not recyclable. Therefore The Press leaves each and every subscriber no choice but to throw into the rubbish more than 2.5 Kg of solid plastic per year!!! Despite emailing them and calling them twice they have not revealed to me how many subscribers ( i.e. plastic bag wasters ) they have. If I did my math correctly that is 2.500 Kg or 2.5 ton of waste per 1.000 subscribers!! Imagine the mountain of plastic for say 25.000 or 30.000 subscribers. I talked to the duty-reporter once but she was not interested to deal with the subject.

This month we want to challenge Neighbourhood Supporters to come together and give generously from the heart this holiday season. With so much going on this time of year it’s easy to get caught up in the festivities and forget about others, especially those having a difficult time.

Whether it’s an elderly neighbour who lives alone to a family on your street working hard to make ends meet, reach out to someone who could use a little extra joy in their life and remind them what the holiday spirit is all about!

Other ideas include fundraising for a local charity, doing a food or toy drive, organising a ‘Secret Santa’ gift exchange on your street, giving a present to a neighbour who helped to make your 2020 better, or even host a community Christmas lunch.

Let us know how you’re giving back in your community in December by emailing: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz
