City assets for sale at a roll of the dice

The meandering Avon River could be all yours, ducks and all. Or you could earn your fortune building a row of hotels on Hagley Park. Perhaps you’d rather take a chance at the casino, or buy up Christchurch Airport so you can park for free.

Hi Neighbours,
The meandering Avon River could be all yours, ducks and all. Or you could earn your fortune building a row of hotels on Hagley Park. Perhaps you’d rather take a chance at the casino, or buy up Christchurch Airport so you can park for free.

But this is not any asset sell-up the city council might be considering.
This is just for fun.

The well-known Christchurch spots are among those displayed on the city's very own colourful version of Monopoly, launched on Wednesday, in plenty of time for Christmas shopping.

We were walking our dog as usual at coes ford today when a man who has set up camp by the gate approached us and threatened us to leave or else! Very scary as this is usually a peaceful camp and walking site. We reported him to the council and they are going to get a ranger to take a look. If I don’t hear back from the council I will talk to Lincoln police. I certainly won’t go there again if he is still camping there. It was an awful experience!

Christchurch public transport users will not be able to use cash on city buses and ferries from mid next year.

The move has prompted concerns about the impact on those who prefer to use cash, especially the elderly and homeless. The proposal also defies a survey that found three-quarters of public transport users believe cash is important.

However, ECan staff say cash handling is consistently raised by drivers, operators and unions as an issue for driver safety and wellbeing, and that it makes sense to take advantage of the roll-out of a new nationwide public transport card to rid the system of cash. The National Ticketing Solution will be introduced in Canterbury in mid-2024.

What do you think of our city's buses and ferries going cashless? Read reporter Keiller MacDuff's full story here (subscription required) and share your thoughts in the comments below.

At 96, Logan Campbell resident Russell Parrish has achieved an incredible feat - ‘knocking off’ the summit of One Tree Hill 30 times over 30 consecutive days. Plus, it was all for a great cause — raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s in honor of his late wife Mary.

Every single day of September, come rain, shine or blustering gale, Russell set off from his home at Ryman Healthcare’s Greenlane village to walk to the top of the iconic mountain set in the heart of Cornwall Park.

The idea also coincided with Ryman Healthcare’s annual Walking for Wellness challenge, which this year aptly had an Everest theme.

In a post that has just closed, someone commented about Sugar and Cancer. It inferred that Sugar was a cause
"Sugar is not a carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substance. However, over-consumption of sugar, particularly added sugars in processed beverages and foods, can contribute to obesity which is an important risk factor for cancer. There is no evidence that consuming sugar makes cancer cells grow faster or cause cancer."
